Probably not. The article coincided with a book McClean had out.

I always wear a poppy but I don't think I would if I had grown up where McClean did. This from the article. "He comes from Creggan, the estate affected most on Bloody Sunday in 1972 when 14 unarmed civilians were killed by the British army in Derry. Six of the fatalities were from Creggan. In 2010, after the Saville report finally concluded that all the victims posed no threat, the British prime minister David Cameron apologised for the “unjustified and unjustifiable” massacre." And surely we fought wars for the sort of freedom that allows people to make their own choice?

Thanks for sharing that link - as you say it’s quite an interesting article. I do think that he comes across well - he acknowledges that he’s made mistakes in the past whilst clearly explaining why he does not wear a poppy.
| Celtic really are quite a bunch arent they on 18:07 - Nov 2 with 882 views | Plums | Is nobody asking why on earth there are remembrance day events happening in October? Whatever happened to a dignified and respectful commemoration on Armistice Sunday and 11/11? Instead we've got some sort of poppy carnival going in for weeks and losing all meaning. There was some woman on FB who paints poppies on clingfilm on bus stops. It's clearly what they gave their tomorrows for. | |

I swear, Mclean talking about why he doesn't wear a poppy is almost as much of a Remembrance tradition as parades and laying wreaths at this point.

Spot on. It's crass in the extreme. When I was growing up, rememberance was a sombre and dignified affair. You bought a poppy in the week of the 11th and held the silence. Now it resembles Disneyland and is being confused for identity rather than marking sacrifice. And I can understand Celtic and some Celtic fans objecting to it all. The British army occupied Ireland and did terrible things. Black and tans etc.

Even 11/11 (the recognition of Armistice Day) is a recent reinvention of an event that, following WW2, was replaced by Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday in November) so as to remember the casualties of both wars. And it was John Snow who coined the phrase poppy fascism. https://www.independent.co.uk/ [Post edited 2 Nov 19:33]

Each club will want to commemorate on home soil involving local military units and veterans' organizations, As there are only two league games before November 11 then the two weekends set aside are this weekend and the weekend of 8 November.

While they have every right to boycott such a tribute they could stay outside the ground, beneath the stand or simply take up no tickets for the game. But they don’t, because they have no decency whatsoever. They would rather boo through the minute.
| Celtic really are quite a bunch arent they on 19:38 - Nov 2 with 426 views | baxterbasics | I'm in two minds about it really. Yes people should be able to decide if they honour it or not. With the expectation they should at least be respectful of those that do. Also I agree it's best kept as Remembrance Sunday, rather than Remembrance all-of-November and some of October too. However, this doesn't change the fact that Celtic fans include a large number of degenerate, illiterate, Anglophobic, terrorist sympathisers. (I also noticed Palacios seemed to have no issue which was nice to see). We have this discussion every year though don't we? | |

Very interesting thanks. I respect his choice and understand it (maybe?) and think that some of the vitriol aimed his way has been disgusting. It’s not a good look to force someone into performative public displays of ‘patriotism’ (or whatever the heck a supposedly solemn period of reflection has turned into). ““Brexit made the idiots louder” and “the poppy season seemed to be getting longer every year”.” Quite. At the same time, he’s an intense bloke with a fiery side and some views that scare the crap out of me. His pro-IRA views are obviously problematic (from our perspective).

I agree with his right to choose, especially when it’s not straightforward in a case like this; he’s got no problem remembering the fallen from his side, he just doesn’t see see us as being part of his side because of the Troubles. I’m not so much in two minds as recognise where he’s coming from even if it’s alien and uncomfortable to me, but I totally understand where you’re coming from too. What a fkn mess! I despise sectarianism in football. There are some unionist flags that make regular appearances at Swansea games; I don’t understand the need.

I feel sorry for people who don't like football. I mean they can go along to the actual war memorial in their town or village on Remembrance Day, but it's hardly the same. Football fans, if they're lucky with the fixtures, can have three or even four goes at being quiet for a minute.

There's a whole lot of turds/obvious bots very upset about this. As if they'd never heard of Alan Turing, Wilfred Owen, Robert Graves or Rupert Brooke. Why don't the 'patriot' crowd ever bother to learn their history? [Post edited 2 Nov 21:09]
