What a fantastic footballer, him in his pomp running at people was fantastic to watch and we’ve been privileged to witness that.

| Ronaldo has retired from International football on 13:26 - Nov 5 by SE1blue | It’s interesting when discussing Ronaldo that those of us who don’t consider him a ‘great’ are constantly told to ‘forget the other stuff’ (both on and off the field) or asked to focus solely on his playing career. Perhaps we can’t overlook that when measuring a man as a ‘great’. Ronaldo seems to have this cult-like following, similar to Trump or Musk, where unacceptable behaviour is ignored because of ‘but look at this…’ |
We're talking purely about footballing ability. There are many players I dislike who I will admit are excellent players. You're endorsing his character to praise his talent.

| Ronaldo has retired from International football on 12:49 - Nov 5 by Billywitch | "Not for me" Just a quick few things from his career... • Chasing 1,000: He is currently just 15 goals away from achieving an unprecedented 1,000 official senior career goals. • UEFA Champions League Royalty: He remains the all-time top scorer in tournament history with 140 goals. • Five-Time Ballon d'Or Winner: Won the prestigious award in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017. • International Trophies: Led Portugal to victory in UEFA Euro 2016 and two UEFA Nations League titles (2019, 2025). • World Cup Longevity: He is the first and only male player in football history to both play and score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments (2006–2026) |
He's undoubtedly a legendary player. Up there with the best. But he's been a cabaret act for the last 5+ years. What does a Saudi goal mean? So what does 1000 senior goals mean? 900 at the highest level would be better and incredible, but 1000's a better number so we have to pad it out with some easy goals. Balloon dOr ... 9 years ago. Still amazing. But 9 years ago. It's the longest, asskissing of a retirement I've ever known. At least, Pele made a film with our players when he was past it. If Ronaldo makes a remake of Escape to Victory alongside Chappers and Wes I'll forgive him.

He was incredible to watch in his prime, and I agree with the poster who said that at his peak he was arguably better, or at least more enjoyable to watch than Messi. Messi probably overall was the better player and slightly more decorated player. But some of the things Ronaldo did were astonishing, and he had a more all-round game...think of some of the athleticism he displayed. That header for Juve is iconic! In the elite leaguues (i.e. not MLS) Messi's playing style would only really work in a side of gifted players, Ronaldo could probably do what he did in any side. A privilege to have seen him play live a few times in his peak. [Post edited 5 Nov 12:52]

I just don’t think he was as good a footballer as the true greats. He was an amazing athlete and combined well with others but the comparison with R9 is a great example. That bloke was truly phenomenal rapid, skillful beyond most and built like a brick shithouse etc Ronaldo was a top part of his generation but I think Messi was always far superior as a footballer and the media helped frame the rivalry far more than anything else.
