Ronaldo has retired from International football 10:47 - Nov 5 with 1103 viewsdavblue

Forget all the other stuff, the ego and it being a few years overdue.

What a fantastic footballer, him in his pomp running at people was fantastic to watch and we’ve been privileged to witness that.

Embarrassed himself in recent years, but yeah.

One of the greatest of all time.

Could probably play in Saudi until he's 50.

Can't say I ever enjoyed watching him since he left United tbh.

I'm not sure we should forget that he paid compensation who had a credible accusation of rape though.

Hmm... maybe.... but I can't help feel if he wants and deserves all tbe adulation and plaudits.... he should have retired years ago. From all football. Surely, that's the smartest and classiest way to go out. At the top.

I haven't taken him seriously for years as it's become a farce.

….he was, in my opinion, far more exciting to watch than Messi.

Up there with R9 as the best of the “modern” footballers and undoubtedly in the mix for best ever.

Keaton, Kint, McManus, Fenster and Hockney.

Pity for him that he did not get a Messi style send off. His ego really does get the better of him. Fine player and brought a lot of flair, personality and colour to the game.

Amazing player (not quite as good as Messi), really incredible.

Cant abide him. A lot of those characteristics that I dislike are what make him such a competitor and I appreciate that.

Hell of player though

Tevez, Rooney and Ronaldo were a joy to watch for United. Unbelievable chemistry.

Doubt very much we’ll have heard the last of him in international football.

Infantino is probably already lining up a special award for him, to be presented at the game that’s going to be held in Portugal at the next World Cup.

Greatest International Mega Player award…with suitable acronym to boot.

One of the greatest ever footballers - without question.

But you’re still correct as he was a complete embarrassment at the WC as well as the last Euros and he should’ve retired from international football at least five years ago.

I don’t really care whether he’s likeable or not as his personality is sort of irrelevant. To put it in an ITFC context, I’d rather have 11 arseholes on the pitch who were absolute winners than 11 nice guys who are not remotely as good.

Hated watching him play. All the step over rubbish just got on my t*ts.

Never a team player, never looked to bring others into a game, always just wanted to be on the end of a move and just threw a strop every time it didn't happen.

I won't miss him at all.

imagine the carnage if a team was made up of 11 arseholes. It would implode. The closest we came was probably the Bullard era Town team.

Lately I have been appreciating Ronaldinho. He was a magician with the ball. Certainly should be considered up there with Messi and Ronaldo.

Ronaldinho had all the talent in the world, was fabulous in his early days at PSG and Barca. Loved watching him. Shame it all came so easy to him as he lost the drive and application once he hit the big time. Became a party boy. Still is.

"Not for me"

Just a quick few things from his career...

• Chasing 1,000: He is currently just 15 goals away from achieving an unprecedented 1,000 official senior career goals.
• UEFA Champions League Royalty: He remains the all-time top scorer in tournament history with 140 goals.
• Five-Time Ballon d'Or Winner: Won the prestigious award in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017.
• International Trophies: Led Portugal to victory in UEFA Euro 2016 and two UEFA Nations League titles (2019, 2025).
• World Cup Longevity: He is the first and only male player in football history to both play and score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments (2006–2026)

If you can't appreciate his football talent, whatever you think about the rest of him i feel a bit sorry for you...as you've missed something special. He was incredible to watch in his prime, and I agree with the poster who said that at his peak he was arguably better, or at least more enjoyable to watch than Messi.

Messi probably overall was the better player and slightly more decorated player. But some of the things Ronaldo did were astonishing, and he had a more all-round game...think of some of the athleticism he displayed. That header for Juve is iconic!
In the elite leaguues (i.e. not MLS) Messi's playing style would only really work in a side of gifted players, Ronaldo could probably do what he did in any side. A privilege to have seen him play live a few times in his peak.

It’s interesting when discussing Ronaldo that those of us who don’t consider him a ‘great’ are constantly told to ‘forget the other stuff’ (both on and off the field) or asked to focus solely on his playing career.

Perhaps we can’t overlook that when measuring a man as a ‘great’.

Ronaldo seems to have this cult-like following, similar to Trump or Musk, where unacceptable behaviour is ignored because of ‘but look at this…’

I don't argue he wasn't an amazing football talent, I just found his constant whining tedious. Yes Ronaldo could probably do what he did in any side, but as long as that side moulded itself around him, worshiped him as the greatest and made sure everyone appreciated any possible success was due to him.

When he got the ball, it was all that Irish dancing nonsense. Oh for a time machine and Beattie to put him in the laps of row C.

Not to mention the strong whiff of allegations off the field.

The way his international career has ended is just typical.

very dubious off field accusations indeed. Kept him from visiting the US for many years.
