Walton is doing as he’s told 17:05 - Nov 8 with 972 viewsBelsteadCav

We all know Walton isn’t the best with his feet so why make him play out?

Bournemouth press so high, so it doesn’t matter if he smacks the ball down the pitch.

I’ve been hard on Billy Jean lately, but that was probably his best game so far this season.

That was also Emersons worst game so far, so expect a change next game

I think so too. He won't have been told to do what he did today but his hesitancy on the ball will be because he was thinking about playing out first and foremost. And then he ran out of time to do the correct thing which would have been to lump it. Mind you, if he'd have sold Evanilson and put him on his arse he would have made the highlight reels. I'd rather a keeper who can spot the risk and make the right decision though.

Walton plays one the longest games in the prem

We clearly dont ask him to play short balls all the time

Occssionally the keeper needs to play the ball short

If you cant its another sign you arent a prem keeper

It’s not the playing with his feet, it’s the indecision/lack speed of thought. He’s not quick enough to make his mind up what to do with it whether it’s at his feet or on his hands.

The problem starts with the ball to O’Shea which Bournemouth signpost - as soon as it gets rolled to him the press is triggered and then it’s a ball to Walton’s weak foot and trouble arises.

A few questions that arise - a) should we look to kick our first goal kick long after a really positive start? B) should we play right into the pressing trap of one of the best out of possession teams in world football? C) should we try and overplay after being caught in that trap?

Unfortunately I think we got the answer to all of those questions wrong. It’s a howler and unfortunately it’s a both a personal one and a system one.

There was an easy pass on with his right foot, instead of that he tried to take on the forward. I'm pretty sure he wasn't told to do that.

That goal is on Walton, I don't think you can spin it any other way.

Perfectly summed up.

At times you have to accept that as a team their pressing game is better than our playing out from the back ability.

In that situation just don't risk it.

For those abusing and making Walton the scapegoat find a dictionary and look up supporter and team. Lots of idiots on here.

Is Walton any worse with his feet than the average keeper? I don't remember an error from him like that before?

Agree Emersonn was really poor, almost from the first minute actually. Despite us being superb for 10 minutes or so, he was still a weak link in my view. Flemming should be knocking O'Neill's door down.

When you are on the pitch, you do ( or should do ) what you think is the right thing to do at the precise moment, not have a coaching manual running through your mind. It's up to any individual player to take responsibility for what they do at any given time. Goes for any player in any position, not just keepers. The modern day curse, coaching to within an inch of a players life.

I agree with you there, over coaching is definitely a thing

You see it everywhere

Walton had two easy and one moderate option to pass to. It was his indecision, not his inability that cost the goal.

Quite. I’m not sure why they can’t take the decision making out of it and have two or three scenarios instead where he knows exactly what to do in each case. Turn it into muscle memory effectively and then you’re always ahead of the opposition. E.g. under no pressure?; do what you want. A pressing opponent within 5 yards, play first time to a free defender one touch allowed to shift feet if needed, or clear. A pressing player only a couple of metres away, if team mate clearly available then first time pass on receiving side ok, otherwise just clear it and don’t try your worst Johan Cruyff impression! Just make it automatic for the keepers and minimise decision making. For good players their best vantage to gain space is always in their head and a structured approach to help with decisions could possibly help there.

Or I could be talking ballacks.

Yeah, much more than just Walton making a mistake for that goal.

The ball was played to waltons left foot. That is his strongest

Walton brought the ball central looked across to diop saw that pass wasnt on and tried to quick foot the striker

He was completely unaware that palacios was absolutely free right in front of him with a simple right footed pass.

There is no problem other than walton messing up. That play was very simple to do. He fked up. His awareness is terrible. Hes looking at oshea. Looks down at the ball. Looks to diop then trips over the ball in a panic. Zero awareness of the easy outball
