My Top 5 manager choices 20:51 - May 3 with 10131 viewsSuperfrans

Trying to keep on top of all the manager links is doing my head in.

For what it’s worth, this is my current thinking - although Mowbray is looking increasingly unlikely, it seems.

If that does prove to be the case, I reckon it’s down to Hurst, Jones, Warburton - and possibly Grayson, if he decides against another contract at Bradford.

Yes please:
Tony Mowbray
Nathan Jones
Mark Warburton
Simon Grayson
Paul Hurst

Hmm, okay then:
Nigel Clough
Scott Parker
Kevin Nolan
Jack Ross
David Unsworth
Darrell Clarke (with Marcus Stewart)

Hmm, rather not:
Frank Lampard
Graham Potter
Jaap Stam
Chris Coleman
Gary White
Kenny Jackett

No no no no no. Please no:
Shefki Kuqi
Alan Pardew
Sol Campbell
Steve McLaren
Gary Megson

No chance (not going to happen):
Paul Cook
Danny Cowley
Martin Steijn
Steven Gerrard

What's the thinking on Potter being a rather not? Surprised you'd quite strongly prefer the likes of Grayson to him and I'd have him clearly ahead of the managers in your hmmm okay then pile for sure. Not going to happen as he'll do better than us I expect but if he was interested he'd be in my top 3 for sure.

Based on the feedback from a friend in Sweden, who told me his teams don’t play the best football. Might be nonsense, but if true, I just don’t think he’s what we need.

All of my top 5 get their teams playing decent football, have experience of promotions in the EFL, so know their way around English league football, can work on lower budgets and will view coming here as a way to build their careers.

Surprised your mate in Sweden says that - they play some great stuff, always trying to go short from the back. Not averse to mixing it up when they have to but I don't think there are many complaints about their style.

But... I’m not sure we have the budgets to keep his fake tan supplies topped up....

And, five years older than McCarthy?

Hey, I am just trying to think outside the box and predict the unpredictable - It seems like an Evans thing to do is hiring JG

Yeah, get that. No problem. Just was surprised to see his name tbh.

I’ll be honest, I’ve given up trying to second guess this one. It seems totally counter-intuitive for Evans to leave it so long. I initially thought it was a sign he knew exactly who he wanted and was determined to wait for the right man. I suspect though that it’s actually that he genuinely wants to review as many candidates as possible, probably because he’s not at all sure himself... which doesn’t fill me with confidence tbh.

I think he's got a lot of faith in the current back room staff and believes he has time to consider his options, strongly suggesting to me he is waiting to see what happens in some play off games. I have a feeling an announcement will come very soon after the L1 playoffs.

It had occurred to me that he likes Hurst and Mowbray, and is gambling that he will be able to get one or the other - perhaps with Jones or Warburton as a plan b.

ME won't pay a release fee so you can rule Nathan Jones out.

Hurst looks a promising option

Been very successful in getting teams promoted. I reckon, given time, he’d do a decent job for us.

I just don’t buy that about Jones. I’ve read it in a few places but...

Why would we not pay for Jones, but presumably would have to for Hurst or Cook?

Also, how much compo could Luton really demand? He’s been a league two manager for them, presumably on league two money. It can’t be more than a few hundred thousand (less than £500k) and once that’s amortised over 2/3 years of a manager’s contract, it’ll be easily justifiable.

We’d be able to save whatever we pay out to him on the salary we’d pay him, compared to Mick. (If Mick was on £500k pa, we could pay Jones £350k pa and save £450k over three years just like that).

I toyed with Parker in the top bracket too. Of all the celebrity ex-players, he’d be my first choice - done well with Spurs u18s this season apparently, and gone about his post playing career quietly and without fuss. We’d have less ego to worry about with him compared to some of the others,

Because he's only just signed a new 4 year contract and Evans has already been put off by the release fee. I know somebody close to Jones and was told this about a week ago that ME won't pay a high release fee.
