A scandal that seems to be coming back to the fore 08:06 - May 3 with 1658 views | Mullet | https://www.theguardian.com/society/2020/may/03/exclusive-fifth-of-uk-homes-chil The week we were sent home from work, there was already a contingency in plan as we have a high proportion of kids on free school meals. A company stepped up and provided hundreds of thousands of pounds worth to us and all the schools we are connected to across the country. That includes use in with one chain of supermarkets they are aligned with. That alone suggested massive problems that weren't being dealt with. This will likely be a health and social timebomb too, given how prevalent foodbanks had become long before this. The effect on the poorest will always be significant, but the necessary measures means isolation could stop people getting the help they need. There is a community initiative not too far from me where people can get massively discounted basics if they need it, but I've not seen it publicised anywhere. I wonder if the best step would be enlisting the media to make people aware at least these things are out there?

And we're led by a prime minister who gives an 'exclusive interview' to the Sun newspaper.

There has been some really good coverage on how it affects poor people disproportionately (not just those that catch it either). I did some digging last week to make a few resources for my students to help them understand it a bit better. The British numbers are appalling frankly, one thing I noticed was that we similar distributions of urban populations to countries with far better numbers but our social inequality rating doesn't tally. Although we have far more money than a lot of nations, and supposedly less social inequality we are not faring as well we "should" roughly speaking. That can only be down to how strictly others locked down borders/travel and the type of health system they have in place in my opinion. The release of money was extremely welcome but the flipside makes me ask why has it just been sitting there all this time? (metaphorically speaking)

Visibility essentially. I hope this puts an end to poverty porn and similar types of exploitative media too. You can sense the really callous and nastier element of this country feeling the squeeze too now. The way in which Piers Morgan has abandoned them, Martin, Farage et al. are all scrabbling from the brink of irrelevance is fascinating to watch. I think the notional support they garnered in that time and the focus on Brexit and selfishness has taken a real hit now we've been hit with such a threat. Whilst Colonel Tom has become a bit of a shameful media distraction, the charitable spirit that this place and the nation as a whole has embraced might be a big catalyst for change on the other side of this.

Really hope you're right. But part of me worries this is like some sort of empathy holiday where we care for the NHS, essential workers, old people, kids, the unemployed, the environment etc. then go back to normal as soon as we can. It's important to keep this stuff front and centre not as an unfortunate byproduct of the Covid-19 crisis but as symptoms of what we've become. [Post edited 3 May 2020 11:04]

The link between 'poor people' and ill health is well established and something was actually being done about it until the tory/lib alliance cut back the accelerated health care provision programme in deprived areas. Nobody in politics seem to realise that cuts have consequences

A scandal that seems to be coming back to the fore on 13:56 - May 3 with 1071 views | Guthrum | The thing which concerns me is that in November 1918 Lloyd George promised: 'To make Britain a fit country for heroes to live in.' But as the ruined world economy and normal life intervened (along with the fruits of dangerous speculation after 1929), that was let drop and we ended up with worse poverty than there had been before. Will the aftermath of Covid-19 be any different?

But Japan hasn't gone into full lockdown just social distancing even restaurants can remain open and up to last week had only tested 12,000 since Feb - maybe its locking down which is killing more? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-52466834 [Post edited 3 May 2020 14:09]

That's an interesting comparison. Initially I thought of Atlee's government and how we might finally see the country wake up to these lot and look inward for reform and rebuilding. Maybe I was too optimistic? I'm already dubious that VE is going to be commandeered into some stunning historical illiteracy to try and confuse it as some sort of victory march for a golden-hazed fantasy of a Britain that didn't exist too.

Yes, our death toll that is considerably higher than a lot of countries is because we locked down and it probably would be lower if we stuck with the “taking it on the chin”. 🤦â€â™‚ï¸
