Lakenheath F15 has crashed into the North Sea (n/t) on 11:46 - Jun 15 by GeoffSentence
The crowd got their money's worth that day.
It was bloody strange! Just seemed to hover there for an eternity and no one had a clue what was going on... To see it ditch like that just left us all stunned... Poor sod was all right in the end though, if a bit soggy.

Blimey. Just googled - apparently the pilot fractured his ankle when landing on top of the plan. I guess he'd take that over going down with it.

Presumably you were there as a member of the Dagestan Military Intelligence Mission?
Also, speaking of Dagestan, whatever happened to FC Anzhi Makhachkala? They had a good season or two splashing the cash and then all but disappeared. Some decent players on the books too iirc.

Foreign investor came in, can't remember the name but he was some big noise in hospitality.

That happened right in front of me; it was so odd. Until the jet pitched downwards it felt part of the display - even the ejection! From memory the pilot was flying too low and slow so stalled it.

The problem was the pilot made an error when after doing the "bow" he retarded the throttle instead of moving the nozzle lever to the "Hover Stop" position. Once that happens, it's almost impossible to recover the transition to forward flight and by the time the pilot tried to open the throttle, the plan was descending too quickly, so he ejected..
You are the obsolete SRN4 to my Fairey Rotodyne....

The one in '87 came down very close to the home of a friend of mine. Actually heard the sound of the impact from several miles away.
Blimey! I wasn't born for the 1st and only 6 for the other one. Surprised no one ever talked about it, Kegworth near where I live now is famous for a plane coming down. Obviously a different type of plane and horrendous amount of fatalities though.

Remember seeing that one on the news.
When holidaying at Southwold in the late '70s and early '80s we used to see the F-111s coming in fast over the coast only a couple of hundred feet up.
Actually saw a Royal Navy merlin helicopter fly over west Ipswich today at about 1pm, was coming from a south westerly direction so not sure if it was assigned to a search effort? What made me go out and look was the unusual rotor noise as opposed to the usual apache noise, was light grey in colour with a large disk shaped addition under the front section of the fuselage.
