Which think tank might that be and what is their agenda?

Bear in ming that there is an intensive drive at the moment from those who want everyone back to work ASAP, regardless of any risk (because it's hurting their investments) and those Conservatives who don't want their party laid open to attack by changes of direction (or considering it a distraction from Getting Brexit Done). It's a pretty blatant attempt to discredit expert advice in the name of profit and ideology, summed up by a Tory backbencher on Radio 4 last week saying "Why can't the scientists make up their minds, perhaps we should ignore them" (or words to that effect).

I'm not saying that your central premise - that Government action may have led to unnecessary deaths - is wrong. But I'd be very wary of citing something like this as evidence.

it's amazing how far you can see with hindsight.

Regardless of which side was at the helm, the current situation is one you can't beat.
You just get it wrong, pivot, adapt, pivot, adapt to new scenario.

No-one could or can beat this. All the other side can/should do is to lean in and help.

If only Labour had known just how bad JC would have been for their honest supporters.....they would never have elected him as leader. There is some more hindsight.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

This new right wing comedy is tough viewing.

Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.

But you can look at other governments and see that there are much better ways of handling this pandemic. They may not have "beaten" it but they have definitely reduced the affect.

We can and we will hold this government accountable for it's continued failings and u-turns when handling this pandemic.

I think you have missed the point.

People were calling for the government to act, before they actual did.

Time for you to understand the OP wasn’t about hindsight, you should now pivot, adapt, and think about a better reply.

I think there is no question and it cannot be debated that the UK government terribly failed in response to this & for the last 6 months have had their pants pulled down too often.

That said, i don't think its healthy to play political point scoring over a pandemic, especially like certain agitators in the media do.

I daresay our overall response to the pandemic wouldnt look much different whoever was in government as you know the CMO and Public Health England are non elected, that said Johnson missing 5 COBRA meetings is unforgiveable.

The problem with your argument is that there are so many different factors involved just at a societal (tactical) level that comparing two governments at strategic level is nigh on impossible.

All of this talk about holding them to account is disingenuous. We are battling a pandemic fcol. Pandemics don't follow rules, they smash them.

No government stands a chance.

All you do is make it 'less bad' for as long as you can and until a vaccine is found. Until then we all have to do our bit.

That's right in the sense that the government said they were "following the science". But it seems clear that they didn't really do that as the global scientific consensus was for an earlier lockdown.

Cherry-picking the science from an advisory group in the UK isn't the same thing. Especially when that involved flirting with the idea of "taking it on the chin" and a Swedish approach that the UK wasn't remotely ready for.

Where the government has made errors of judgment they must be held to account, particularly when the potential outcome from their incompetence is large scale loss of life. That they lie habitually and frequently does not help.

Regarding your your final paragraph, there is no certainty that a vaccine will ever be found.

As a person that is somewhat into science, you should know pandemics do follow rules.

A virus is just a biological entity, it doesn’t have knowledge of a set of rules that it is supposed to smash.

You are just talking nonsense so that you are able to hold onto a belief.

Whilst we cannot make exact direct comparisons there is enough evidence to show better ways of handling the pandemic than the way our government has.

The government is accountable for delayed reactions, constant u-turns and prioritising the economy over the people, all of which has led to the unnecessary loss of lives, jobs and futures.

Whether you agree with me or not, I, along with many others will hold and continue to hold this government accountable for their handling of the pandemic.

You can add to their charge sheet the changing of procurement rules to try to hide that billions of public money is being channelled to Tory donors and their mates through PPE contracts.

Yes.

And on a related note, we should have accepted what this government was telling us about their ability to handle a healthcare crisis with the first big challenge over ventilators.

A serious and responsible government wouldn't turn to Dyson, JCB and McLaren.
That's what a highly performative, living-in-a-bubble and ultimately pretty stupid government would do.
