I wonder what the numbers are for people seeking help with alcohol problems. At the start of all this i was drinking far too much each evening because i had nothing to do the next day. There must be a lot of people out there who are still doing it. Thankfully I'm not.

I have worked throughout, so not affected me directly. Friends and Family have struggled with it, but not enough to class it as mental health. People still need interaction and conversation, so get out when and where you can.

Just see the piece on Sky about this. I can totally see how the Pandemic/Lockdown has affected peoples mental health. Hope your friend is on the mend.

Said this to the Wife when food shopping. The booze isle was the busiest in the shop. Personally, don't tend to drink much at home or when out, but some seem to think it is the answer to their problems. It only adds to their problems unfortunately.

100% I have.

Not to the extent of needing support/medication, but I have had a quite a few low moments since March, and I never ever have that usually. Just the lack of human interaction on a daily basis, all my interactions being through a computer screen, the lack of the things that I like to do in my spare time (gigs and festivals in particular). I've spent a large part of this year being fed up.

Its fine, and I'm not worried at all, but this mess needs to be sorted sooner rather than later.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

A work colleague has suffered in that he fears he is "not doing enough" under lock down, he is having telephone therapy sessions and seems in general to be having a minor crises of confidence, he really does not have a problem with his work at all, but the slowing down of work load is affecting him, as we all wfh now I have taken to calling him for a chat every so often , he is a great guy to work with. Our office is such a great place to work he should not feel the way he does at all and nobody has given him any reason to either.

I am a sufferer of bipolar affective disorder and I have suffered badly from lockdown. I am currently in receipt of support from my link worker and GP. I was terrible in the first lockdown as I didn't get up until late and was tearful and did not eat. My body seemed to shut down and refuse food and it was my close friends and family that helped me otherwise I would have got worse.

This time I do get tearful but I have learnt to cope a bit better. I will never be 100% with this lockdown as I miss seeing family and friends.

I pray your friend is safe and well and that he is feeling better. Depression and this lockdown can be very hard both the one now and the one preceding. It is the feeling of not being able to interact with people the way we would normally as speaking people on Zoom and on the phone is okay but it is not the same as in person. I can see why people are struggling and there is going to be a lot of problems with this pandemic and mental health.

I am currently in recovery as I have had a turbulent period of mental health and having nervous breakdowns and emotional outbursts due to events in my life and I have every sympathy and support with those struggling.

My support is always here for anyone on this forum and I am more than happy to reply to messages or be added on any social media platform and be texted. I want to help people with mental health if I can as we all need support and friendship and guidance at this time.

Please look after yourselves and those closest to you. It is important we stay positive as there will be a way out of this. One day, we will be able to enjoy going to the football, have a meal out. It might seem unattainable now but it will return.

Think it's well known on here that I am suffering terribly. It's been worse this year with the Covid stuff and the anxiety it's caused me. I rarely leave the house, only for once a week town visit to do essential shopping, the occasional medical appointment and a long walk once a fortnight. I have been suffering years but doctors think the only answers are pills or counsellors. Neither work for me - I cannot take the pills due to an eye condition, and counsellors have never worked. I try to talk to my husband, who has been great, and a few online friends, and have found people on here to be helpful too. I know I am not alone but I long for the days where I can go out and do the stuff I cannot do now.

I’m riddled with anxiety and depression but nothing new, over half my life that’s been my diagnosis.

2020 is still better than 2019 for me, but last year was the peak of my alcohol problem on top of my whole life falling apart so meh.

I’m still working which helps, if I were skint as opposed to a bit tight on my earnings I’d probably be in a worse place.

Gonna get a lot worse I think over the next 6 months especially with government u turns, opposition weakness and appalling management of the economy. Mental health could possibly be the biggest challenge we will now face. The simple fact is the country is now effectively bankrupt given that we now owe more money than our total GDP.

I only hope that in a possible public enquiry in the future that all the culprits are held responsible for this but somehow I doubt it.

Personally I think the government set us on this course wrongly in march and now they won't admit it. Unfortunately because of this they will need to keep fabricating the figures to justify their position.

Now for those that decry fabrication of the figures ask yourself this question. How many times have the government given the total daily death rate for England as opposed to just the Covid figure!

The state of the nation's mental health has been generally poor for a long time now. Brexit and all the fallings out over it hasn't helped. Austerity and all that leads to hasn't helped.

Now with the virus much of what was already wrong has become in even greater focus. The virus itself, regardless of "lockdown" has inevitably made things worse. It has made things worse in terms of those suffering, those in situations leading to it and poorer access to support.

Well said sir and indeed poor mental health care could in general make us a much poorer country in the future.

I hope life continues to improve for you. Keep talking and seeking help when needed. There should be no shame in mental health struggles.

Great messages there, thank you, and likewise if you feel like a chat in the middle of the night as I'm often up at stupid o'clock (have dog with only 1 kidney who will only drink outside, doh!).

Really struck a chord when you said zoom & phone not the same as speaking in person. I think not nearly enough mention is made of people living on their own, particularly if self-isolating and/or in lockdown - humans are social creatures, and it's really hard to survive healthily without interaction with others. I'm lucky in that I'm generally quite self-sufficient & OK in my own company - but there are limits, and if I don't see anyone else to speak with at least once a day, I don't feel quite myself - it's almost as if you need someone else to respond to you for reassurance that you exist! Hard to explain, but it needs to be remembered that solitary confinement is deemed to be a 'cruel and unusual punishment'.

Hugging friends/family is another massive miss when you live on your tod. I'm lucky to have a cuddly dog, & often meet neighbours walking theirs when out, but not always. Having a large garden which keeps me busy & being surrounded by beautiful countryside does help offset quite a lot of the negative stuff though - it's people in town/city high rise flats who I imagine are suffering most.

For me, the answer is personally no, but I’m very lucky in that way. However, I do know and know of a number of people who have been affected to a greater or lesser degree. The worst is a friends’s sister in law who committed suicide earlier this year. She had a number of health issues including suffering from depression and being furloughed was thought to be the straw that broke the camels back. So sad. Mental health is a hugely neglected area.

I know the clowns in charge don’t see it as a fashionable vote winner, but I see neglect of support and research in this area as a national disgrace. I suspect the old attitudes of my youth of ‘man up’, ‘shut up and get on with it’ and ‘grow a pair’ still firmly reside with many who have the power to do something about it.

The things I miss are lack of freedom, to see my friends/socialising, getting out and about, holidays, being able to go into a shop without a muzzle. Things I hate are the divisions this pandemic has caused, the selfishness of people, epic political incompetence that’s made things ten times worse, the dysfunctional media, the words ‘social distance’, hand cleanser that irritates my hands.

My MH has deteriorated, and so has my wife's. We both have mild depression anyway but lockdown has taken away a lot of the things which helped cope - like football or a meal out, a trip to London, stress-free holiday, etc, etc. I am retired, and my wife works P/T (at home since March). The lack of contact with many people outside the home (especially for us blokes, male friends/acquaintances) is a real downer. As much as we love each other, talking with my wife is not always enough. And I am sure she feels the same. Neither of us are drinking more, as drinking is more a social activity for us, and when you take out football Saturdays.....
However, eating becomes more of an issue. We all deal with things differently, or not as the case may be, I guess.

Definitely deteriorated, and training was the best thing getting me through these Groundhog days. Now we aren't allowed to do that because the gyms are shut, despite the Govts own stats (COVID Surveillance Reports) showing minimal transmission rates.
