Had no idea until recently about his 'work' re HIV/Aids, which was utterly appalling.

He's one of a worryingly large number of people - and there are many on here too - that are much more concerned about defending the rights of people to be bigots than they are about the victims of bigotry. The hypocrisy on show there is also quite staggering too, and a hallmark of the new right to be honest. They bang on about 'snowflakes' and 'cancel culture' but then block anyone who challenges them and tell people not to shop at Sainsburys because they dare to speak out against racism.

I do think these gotcha's are a bit pointless - there is a big difference between 'cancel culture' and blocking someone on your own personal Twitter account

The new right is projection, projection, projection. Their intellectual arguments are about as sophisticated as a playground 'I know you are, you said you, but what am I?' repeated ad infinitum.

Ooh I know this one!

One is real (grumpy old gammons on Twitter blocking people who hurt their feelings) and the other is made up guff used by right wing conservatives to cry about their own actions having consequences (cancel culture)?

AN is a poorly informed straight white male with privilege dripping from him. Always a joy to hear him whinging about COVID from whatever one of his holiday villas he decides to run away to whilst we are all stuck at home.

He’s also Chairman of one of the worst alt-right wing Tory PR rags out there and evidently was happy to take dodgy funding to damage society and line his own pockets.

How he’s managed to get this far as a respected journalist, let alone time at the Beeb, is incredible.

That's more snowflake behaviour. I'm not sure if Neill has done this himself yet, but there have been people of his ilk telling people to boycott companies that are openly refusing to advertise with GB News. There's numerous examples of the new right boycotting companies who they see as promoting a 'woke agenda'. There's even more examples of them being 'snowflakes' and flouncing off and blocking people who say things they don't like.

Not so much a GOTCHA as “it’s publicly evident AN has always been a sh1t.”

Also odd he’s so determined to play down sexual abuse that everyone knows happened as nothing based on how one chooses to read a single report.

The Beeb has form there too.

I don't know how people can't see this.

Colin Kaepernick takes a knee:

Right wing conservatives - "Boooooo boycott the NFL, don't give him another job!"

Nobody in Hollywood wants to work with Mel Gibson because he's wildly anti-semitic:

Right wing conservatives: "OMG! Cancel culture! Marxists! Antifa!"

It's embarrassingly juvenile.

If anyone can name me a celebrity who has had their career irrevocably damaged by 'cancel culture' when it wasn't as a result of something they've said or done that the majority of people would find offensive or distasteful then I'll eat my hat.

'Cancel Culture' is just people facing consequences for their own actions.

Colin Kapernick
The Dixie Chicks
Bill Mahr

Bonus points for guessing who was outraged by them and why.

So much of this is down to a misunderstanding of what free speech means. They confuse freedom to make comments with protection from consequences.

If you make stupid comments people are going to push back. It's really not difficult to understand.

I felt like taking up your challenge, just to be a contrary fcker. Was gonna suggest Germane Greer, but I don't have the guts to go there and fight that.

I even went to the trouble of googling "cancel culture victims" but that just resulted in people who shoulfd have been cancelled like R Kelly.

There was one interesting link though, making the point that often "victims" of cancel culture are not famous: https://www.forbes.com/sites/evangerstmann/2020/09/13/cancel-culture-is-only-get

Not sure what I reckon on this really, but am nervy about pile-ons in general and don;t really trust the court of public opinion.

Jon Ronson’s book “So you’ve been publicly shamed?” Is the go to for this.

As for more public figures, Corbyn was cancelled ... in the sense that his principles and policies were almost entirely buried under misrepresentations, accusations and smears.

I think he pointlessly hectored far too many of his guests (left and right) and doesn’t listen.

It just plays up to the oppositional nature of politics where he plays the proxy opponent. I’m sure we’ll have years to look forward of his bad faith takes and him willfully getting people’s positions wrong on a whole range of subjects. But luckily only to a paying audience.
