I'm not particularly a fan, it's something my GF likes and I tolerate. I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but there seems to be quite a few instances of people cooking things they haven't cooked before. My question is why on earth would you go on a cookery show, with the intention of cooking better than the other guests in order to win the money, but take on something you've never attempted? Surely you'd do something you know you can do well... and practice like mad on top of that, before the show?
So weird.
It also amazes me how many people (mainly Northerners) haven't heard of pretty basic things. Like the other day there were a couple of people who didn't know halloumi's a cheese.

Because it's not really a serious cooking competition, is it? While the best food does often win, it's more about the atmosphere that people create and watching how people gel. A grand isn't much in the grand scheme of things anyway, it's just a bit of fun.

I've thankfully not watched that in a good few years but I don't believe I actually ever saw a "contestant" who could actually cook on there. It's just a vector for people who want to be on TV to get on TV.
I did watch one which was fairly amusing where the person had just bought ready-made food from Waitrose (I believe) which resulted in them winning.

You think they go on for the money? It's like £1k isn't it? They go on to be on tv. I doubt many think it's worth practicing multiple times for £1k?
There was a Tory councillor who went on there and did the whole thing for a tenner a head I think, to show people that it was possible to get by on a shoestring.
But not many people these days would eat tinned fruit with whipped cream in a can for afters.

It was a guilty pleasure of mine, have to say. And there was only one professional (which is against the rules). He admitted it and apologised though, so I guess that's fair enough.

Ok, fair point, maybe you wouldn't bother practicing, but surely it's a bit weird to cook something you've never cooked before?
I'm with you.
I'd be cooking the same thing for a fortnight if necessary to get it right on the night.
I did know a lass from BSE who won went on the show and won it.
In fact the show used the taxi firm I was at to run some of the contestants around and a fella we knew from the town's rank for the black cab for the scoring scenes.

Yeah, like you can be on telly AND cook something you know/might help you win.
