Salah plays for another team in another division and dives only slightly more than the average Premier League forward, yet there seems to be a weekly thread on it? Why?

Eric Gates was brilliant at it.
I never saw Gates play live - did he go down quite easily? If he played today would he have received a few yellow cards for it or did he simply exaggerate contact rather than outright dive?

He was a master at playing with his back to goal. A nightmare to defend against so would invite contact and used it to his advantage.

From what I remember his classic 'foul' was getting barged over from behind when receiving the ball with his back to the goal.

Because of his small size he had a low centre of gravity, so he was very good at receiving the ball with his back to goal & turning quickly, inevitably going over the defender’s leg & winning a penalty. I don’t think he was a diver, just exceptionally good at drawing fouls.

I never saw him do a salmon type no contact leap. There was always ( as I remember ) some contact. He was small and quick. Big slow clumsy defenders couldn't cope.

You have summed Mr Gates up perfectly. Against Aris Salonika we were awarded three penalties in the home leg. Not sure if today VAR would have let them all through!

Pretty much this. I remember when we played Aris Salonika he won so many free kicks.
Footage of the game below. He wins three pens and gets another man sent off in a separate incident.
Eric Gates was some player and we nearly lost him when he walked out after not getting in the team, it was then that Robson had to find a place for him and fell upon the revolutionary system of him playing just behind the front two.

All three were pens.
By the way in the away leg Aris 'scored' two goals that weren't over the line.
Goals at 5:34 (cleared off the line by Burley), 23:48, 1:08:53 (off the line)

Thanks for putting that up, it’s great.
A few things.
We don’t complain at all, do we.
I reckon the last one is over the line.
Brilliant celebration for the last one in the shape of the forward roll from the bloke not involved at all.
Looks an amazing place to watch a football match - were you there?
Good to see adverts for ouzo on the billboards.
Sadly I wasn't there but I know a man who was. It was a very intimidating atmosphere and at 3-0 he thought we were going out as the ref was giving us nothing whatsoever. Took a fantastic goal to kill the tie.
He also went to Prague for the next round and we scraped through there as well. After that it was plain sailing until the second leg of the final.
He says that the best side we faced was Cologne, felt the two wins never get the credit they deserved as they were one of the powerhouses of European football at the time and had excellent players all over.
