This is a bit rich....... 07:47 - Feb 16 with 1501 viewsHerbivore

........ coming from a government that has literally banned schools from teaching materials that could be deemed anti-capitalist and that has also banned materials from groups that promote “victim narratives that are harmful to British society”.

Essentially they don't want young people being taught about the BLM or XR movements but they do want the fringe right to be platformed at universities. The culture war rumbles on apace, perpetuated by the most incompetent and corrupt government we've ever had.

Damn this Tory government, damn anyone who voted for them, and damn anyone stupid or amoral enough to still support them.

I think the broad thrust of the argument here is right, they're doing it because they don't know what else to do and 'levelling up' is a bit harder.

They're a bunch of feckless tw@ts. This whole culture war nonsense is incredibly trying and potentially quite dangerous. That Guardian piece is interesting but I think she underestimates the impact the Tories are having. Look at the way the word woke is bandied about on here and on social media as an insult without people seemingly understanding what it actually means.

The alt right are ramping up the fake outrage at perceived cancel culture on a more or less daily basis, even though it's highly questionable that cancel culture even exists, outside of the right boycotting companies they perceive as being woke.

It's outrageous really, pitting one chunk of the population against the other. And outside the Guardian, I don't see many in the media or in public life really calling it out for what it is.

Funnily enough he was leaping to Rod's defence the other day when I described him as scum. Poor Lowie, he's become so poisoned by his hatred of some bogeyman version of 'the left' that he can't see the wood for the trees anymore and he's now getting his opinions from Spiked. Poor, poor Lowie.

I am not an expert on Spiked but I have seen a few of their articles and they are usually aimed at a particular audience without doubt.

But what I found really sour, was Brendan O'Neill calling an autistic teenager a "Millennial weirdo with a monotone voice."

Not exactly classy.

Of course before that he called the Jimmy Saville investigation a "media witch hunt" in which the "Victims would be better off keeping quiet."

So I suppose I avoid giving his site so much of a click.

I also had to smile when a pal of mine called the Guardian a 'Far Left' publication [!] whilst citing Spiked as a worthy news source.

He clearly has no idea of Spiked's origins in the slightest, what with it starting its day as a Commie paper literally run by a self-proclaimed Marxist; i.e. O'Neill.

For libertarians they're very good at taking away people's liberties. Be it freedom to travel and work across neighbouring countries, freedom to transport goods seamlessly between NI and the rest of the UK, freedom for heritage bodies to choose what exhibits to show, and now dictating to universities who they can or can't chose to host.

It's all very controlling and has a slight whiff of fascism about it.

He's just another in a long list of vacuous attention-seekers who say 'shocking' things for clicks. I doubt he believes half of what writes or that he ever actually understood Marxism. They just see a space for far-right content and want to make a name for themselves while dragging down the level of discourse in this country, something lowhouse is usually very keen on flapping about, so no idea why he's linking to such baseless nonsense as an argument.

O'Neill and his buddies are just professional contrarians. There is no real ideology there. They latched on to communism when Labour drifted to the right as a way of positioning themselves as against mainstream political discourse, at some point - possibly when Labour drifted left but the country drifted right - they decided the best way to piss as many people off as possible was to go ultra right Libertarian and just try to be as controversial and obnoxious as possible. It's all rather odious but also completely transparent.

Sadly the likes of O'Neill and Spiked poison political discourse rather than adding anything of value to it. Different views are valuable of course, but not when they are put forward without any kind of underpinning argument or value base and only with the intention of being contrary and trying to rile people up. Basically they are a bunch of jeb-ends and really shouldn't be treated as a serious source of news or commentary.

My mate was ranting about this piece he'd seen [Spiked] so I read it.

It was just a simplified copy of a Guardian article published 8 days previously.

Only difference was it had been edited into fewer words and printed in larger text with broad spaces between each line.

Almost large enough spacing to run a finger along in fact.

The culture war is a way to maintain the Brexit division and messaging that has served the right so well electorally. It’s the same ”othering”, jingoistic flag-waving and Make Britain Great Again soundbites but turned fully inward this time. It’ll also be used to deflect from the real effect of Brexit and the government’s own performance.

Starmer in particular needs to stop leaning into and legitimising it. And instead protect those minorities and/or the most vulnerable in society that will be on the receiving end.
