I wouldn't book a holiday yet if I were you on 09:38 - Mar 13 with 1940 views | StokieBlue | Europe are unfortunately now having to deal with the variants including the UK B117 variant. It's just so much more infectious it makes things very difficult. In this country we are through that specific issue as 98% of all cases in the UK are now the B117 variant. Worth noting that vaccination does give good protection against the B117 variant. Personally I don't understand the rush to get abroad as soon as is absolutely possible. SB

I guess some people are desperate for footie, some for gigs/festivals, some for the pub, some for travel. The one that struck a chord with me was when they announced lockdown in March last year - but it was like in 3 days time, so you had the chance to do some last minute whatevering. It was sunny, so I went out for a last chance motorbike ride. In Ipswich, the queue for the MaccyDs was the longest I've ever seen. Still, both were better than stripping the shops of the last bog rolls I guess!

I'm itching to get away, but I also think booking anything now is utter madness. I'm going to wait until after the summer and see how things look but I fully expect I won't be going overseas until 2022 now.

The advance announcements were the most bizarre thing weren't they? Like a rush for everything wasn't to then be expected. Looking back it all brought out the worst in people. I distinctly remember clocking one man in Tesco car park after restrictions on some items had been introduced, taking stuff to his car and then returning to the store for more.

Pretty much the same, other than I hope to get away maybe late summer / autumn. And I hope to make it a proper big one - hopefully got a suitable house sitter lined up.

Those early days brought out the best in people, and the worst in others. 100% with you on that Jeera. We actually set up a shopping/delivery group in our village for the oldies who were too scared to go shopping themselves. Now, they have pretty much all embraced online shopping and/or paired up with their "helpers" on an ongoing basis. When I asked one elderly neighbour if he needed any shopping he told me I was the 3rd person that week to offer. Definitely saw lots of people doing good things.

I’m with you on that. Unless it’s to see family who are living abroad, which I have a huge amount of sympathy for, I‘m personally not desperate to travel. I loved travelling, but at the moment it just feels like the juice isn’t worth the squeeze. Not to mention the fact the U.K. economy could do with a leg up the summer, I’m going to invest my holiday funds into day trips locally.

If things look okay late summer I might think about getting away, or maybe a city break in Autumn. Think a big holiday will be the order of the day in 2022. I'll go away somewhere in the UK in the summer I imagine.

The first elements of your list don't really have much to do with the last (travel), there are totally different issues around them which is what people need to understand. Lumping different activities together isn't correct in my view. I am sure everyone would like to travel but sometimes we simply don't get everything we want. We will need to wait and see what things are like in 3 months time. SB [Post edited 13 Mar 2021 10:06]

Oh absolutely. I was referring specifically to the response to the announcements. Many others have shown plenty of community spirit and, speaking for my family, I don't know what we would have done without my mum's nextdoor neighbour who has been wonderful to her throughout.

I hadn't realised just how far the rest of Europe is behind the UK in their vaccine roll out. We are on course for all over 18's to be vaccinated by the end of May but if there are still high infection rates and huge numbers of unvaccinated adults in European countries then those destinations are out of the question this year. We are supposed to be at a wine festival in Germany this summer but it looks like Tel Aviv will be the destination of choice for family Glassers in August. [Post edited 13 Mar 2021 10:06]

Exactly. I had to cancel two big holidays last year (which is perhaps excessive anyway) including visiting my 93 year old gran in the US. It was rubbish but these aren't normal times. As it stands, unless things change a lot with regards to vaccine progress and cases in other countries I don't plan to go away this year. Already got a cottage in the UK booked for the summer. I have no idea why people are all clamouring for holidays right now. Covid aside, it's going to be fookin expensive and everywhere'll be rammed for the next year at least. I'm happy enough to wait till after all the [redacted]s of this world get their week in the Canaries. Then it's off to Hemsby.

Think I maybe misunderstood your original point. I was just saying that some people miss travel just as some miss other stuff. Of course it's got to be safe etc. And (as a travel addict) it's got to be worth going - not much point going to say Amsterdam if everything is shut.

It is one of the things that I live my life for. City breaks seeing the world or 2 weeks of bliss in a villa with the family. Nothing ever compares to the relaxation of being in a completely different country and spending time with each other. 2 weeks in a remote villa with my family where you spend all day outside and eat outside seems a safe thing to do and perfect for mental well being
