I've been thinking 09:42 - Mar 18 with 1725 viewsbluelagos

Yeah I know - not always a sensible way to spend your time, but anyhows.

If I were to get on my motorbike and go for a blast, like a proper blast, for arguments sake 40 mph over a speed limit - proper lost your license stuff...

Now forgetting all things CV - so let's say I was on my way to the shops - but I don't get caught. No police are around, no traffic cameras, no self incriminating youtube videos of me doing speeding (Yes, some people do post those)...so no crime is reported/recorded.

So my question - would I be a criminal? Would I have committed a crime? Did a crime even take place?

Just out (not to commit a crime) but interested in people's thoughts. Completely hypothetical as I wouldn't dream of riding 40 mph over a limit in case anyone is worried.

I'm in court on Monday for my ludicrous speeding offences, just a total waste of everyones time and tax payer money - hopefully increase on fine will be small for my heinous crime of doing 70mph on the A12

Criminal is decided by whether dealt with by fixed penalty or thru court. Exceeding the limit by over 30 mph would result in a court appearance, but you'd still need to be found guilty.

This is one of those "Does a tree falling over in a forest make a noise if there's no-one there to hear it" questions.

As you say, that requires thinking and is not a sensible way to spend your time.

Edit: Sorry Facters - didn't see your post as I was in reply mode and it takes me ages to construct my replies because it involves thinking.

Yes, morally you would be a criminal, as you have broken the law, thus committing a crime. Especially doing it consciously and deliberately in such a fashion.

However, if you escape detection, you would not become a convicted (and so a publicly acknowleged) criminal. Only you would know.

The fact you might consider* such an offence to be "harmless" or "not really a crime" is irrelevant. The law of the land is an absolute and defined set of objective rules, considered to be in force over the entire population. You can unilaterally refuse to acknowlege the authority of some or all of those laws (incidentally putting yourself outside of society), but that would carry no weight with the courts or broad public opinion.

* Not suggesting you do, just continuing the philosophical exploration.

So all the women at the vigil on Saturday night in Clapham, given that the police were clear it was an illegal gathering, are they morally criminals then?

Same for the Rangers fans celebrating a week earlier?

I struggle with the tree falling down in a forrest. Science says energy is transferred not lost. So a tree falling down, some of the energy is transferred to noise. So yeah, it makes a noise otherwise the science no longer works.

Sure someone clever than me can quote the physics laws I am referring to.

Classic case of the computer says no. Put some seats in your van and it's legal, take 'em out, you're a criminal.

Fingers crossed the powers that be see some sense.

Tell you one thing Jeera - if/when you get your vaccine, make sure you have some paracetamol to hand. Not sure if it's the vaccine, dehydration (been walking) or too much coffee (3 cups) but my fooking head is killing me.

Or it might just be too much thinking.

Maybe that's a side-effect.

The vaccine makes you start thinking.

Speaking as someone who lives and spends too much time alone, that's a concern.

Not a side effect that impacts everyone though. The cabinet have been vaccinated.

Maybe you have to have had a previous bout of thinking.

I don't suffer headaches - just got a sense of what people complain about. My head was genuinely throbbing half an hour ago. Popped a pill and all good now thankfully. Given I had the jab on Monday - suspect it was probably dehydration tbh.

I'd fancy that in a go-kart.

Maybe not the drop so much, but it looks potential fun to be had there sliding those bends.

Good you've had the vaccine done anyways chap; first one down and that.

I really must chase it up and think I'll get on the phone now as it goes.

I reckon old Schrody got away with one there!

It was a cat it was “a pussy” and by coming up with this whole “Schrödinger’s cat” malarkey his wife didn’t bother to look in the box and he was never found out
