So he's released 09:20 - May 11 with 2282 viewsclive_baker

Huws
Sears
Chambers
Skuse
Nydam
Wilson
Judge
Ward
Edwards remains TBC

Loans expiring:

Parrott
McGuinness
Matheson
Harrop
Bennetts
Thomas

It's all guess work, but of the ones remaining I would imagine there are a few that would be free to leave if there's interest, namely:

Hawkins
Holy
Jackson
Donacien
Lankester

Leaving a squad of:

Cornell
KVY
Woolfy
Toto
Kenlock
Dozzell
Downes
El Miz
Nolan
Bishop
Dobra
Norwood
Drinan

Half of the above are probably squad players at best. Cook sure has some shopping to do this summer, there must be at least 8 to come in.

If Donacien and Jackson are free to leave then we should have just let them leave. I find it hard to believe we'll get a big enough fee for either to make triggering their extensions worthwhile. By the time we've paid them what we'll owe them for ending their contract early and covered agents' fees any fee (if we get offered one at all) will be eaten up.

I think you can expect a few more of this list to be gone as well.

I don't disagree with that at all. I think it's relatively low risk in that if we want to find a home for them we'll be able to, but also low reward given I can't see anyone paying much for them. On that basis, personally I would've just had a clean break. Maybe that's a bit too risky for Cook, he's perhaps seeing what the alternatives look like first and then he'll make room as and when they come.

....if they get sold whilst in contract?

They are both probably on no more than a few grand a week, if we sell the pair of them for as little as £250k combined we'd still make a profit.

I think a couple of clubs are interested in donacien, clubs whose players we are linked to. Would imagine he will be part of a deal.

The whole “retain to sell” sharp practice/cynicism is probably Ashton’s first actions as CE.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

You have to pay them a loyalty payment if you sell them unless they put a transfer request in

That is definitely how it used to work. Sometimes the payment is built into the sale price though

Think Drinan, El Miz and Nolan could leave in some capacity on top of that. Hope Lankester would stay but obviously not shown enough for PC to select him.

If a player is sold when under contract they are usually due a chunk of money, whether that's an agreed lump sum or a percentage of their contract or whatever. The exception is if they put in a transfer request, which is what Murphy did when we sold him to Newcastle. I think £250k for them both is quite optimistic in the current climate and at that level I doubt we'd see much if any of the money as profit.

In the case of Donacien Lee O'Neill told me that was the plan in January, that was why the £50,000 from Plymouth was turned down.

....some fans forget how little Division 3 footballers get paid (in comparison to Champ/Prem, not real life obvs)

If we can make £150k on these two then that's one top end player we can afford to pay.

Under the old regime we would have taken the options, added an extra year and given them a pay rise.

Yeah I think it's all to play for, for many of them.

He's so far released 8 of the largely older guard with minimal / zero resale value, some of which presumably on large salaries. Of the ones extended, or the others already in contract, I certainly wouldn't take this as they're staying. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a further select 6 - 8 move on to make room for his signings.

In that case maybe they’re going to act as makeweights for deals that have already been agreed..? Hope the players know that.

Would have thought that any loyalty bonus would be either small (if now extended over an additional contract year) or nil (as the original contract would have ended and so the player would probably have been wise to split it over the first term).

Jackson was valued highly in the last two windows - not that much has changed in the meantime (because Covid was already here and everybody knows that he is rubbish).

I doubt anything is done like that, although the club may well be aware of interested parties, of course. Players will be aware of their situations, they'll know the drill.

....and we have no idea what's in the contract then even a loyalty payment would be minimal.

The buying club would probably cover it anyway.

We are talking about Jackson and Donacian, not Ronaldo and Messi.

Plus we aren't being run by Laurel and Hardy anymore, even the Bristol fans begrudgingly admitted that Ashton got top dollar for their players.

Jackson has done nothing since January when a loan offer was made for him. He's now in the last year of his contract as well. I really can't see anyone being willing to pay much, if anything, for him at this point. We'll see I guess but given how many players are likely to be out of contract and available for nothing I don't see there being a huge queue of takers for him.
