Am I a bell end? 11:57 - May 20 with 1302 viewsMattinLondon

The answer to that question is undoubtably ‘yes’, however in the following instance I’m pretty sure that I wasn’t but would like some independent advice.

Background- when we moved into our house the fella who owned the house before us told us that the couple who owned the house before him were ‘D.I.Yers’ who weren’t especially good with some of their jobs causing minor problems. The surveyors report didn’t present any issues and so we brought it. The next couple of years, things have broken down due to age and every time someone has come to fix the issue they’ve basically said that the person who did the original job was a cowboy. The latest issue was the tv Ariel that wasn’t installed correctly.

Anyway, the hubby (DIY enthusiast) knocked on the door because he accidentally had a parcel delivered to our address. In passing he said that hedid a lot of the ‘jobs’ around the house to which I basically said that I hope he’s improved as the plumber etc said that nothing was done properly - he basically walked off in a minor huff.

My partner heard this and told me that I shouldn’t have mentioned it at all. In my defence, I thought that I was fairly polite. And, if someone is rubbish at DIY then depending on the job they could leave somewhere in a dangerous state. So was I out of order and a bit of a bell end?

You definitely are a bellend, but not because of your actions in the stated anecdote.

A little unnecessary, but can't fault the honesty.

Although over the many years I've lived in different houses whenever I've called in a 'professional' to fix an issue often the standard response from them has been 'a cowboy fitted this originally' mainly with the aim of charging more.

The joys of home ownership. I imagine most people do not get the opportunity to tell the former owners how bad they were ate their diy attempts.

I have come across a badly bent gas pipe held down with a hacksaw blade, light fittings made out of yogurt pots and electrics that Stevie Wonder would have been proud of.

I wouldn't worry unduly about this, some people who think that they are good at diy will never accept a different opinion. He will probably go home, make a model of you and then spend Sunday evenings sticking pins in it.

I can cope with that - his incompetence will probably see the model fall apart before he gets a chance to stick the pins in.

I can see that - but the professionals we’ve brought in have been recommended by friends or live on our street. They all seemed honest enough - they could have just said it to charge more - but they seemed honest enough and didn’t charge a lot.

Every home I've lived in has been aflicted by bad DIY so thats normal. Come to think of it, I also know an award winning home that's about 10 years old and cost 600,000 to build (by pros!) that is also falling to bits now, so maybe its just a house thing?

Anyway, I wouldn't worry - you just pricked his bubble a bit - perhaps you did his family a favour there?!

Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa

Maybe it is a house thing but not helped by people who don’t really know what they are doing.

Perfectly acceptable.

Years after buying my flat I was told the leases were drawn up incorrectly. This happened way before I was here yet it cost me £600 to fix. If I got the chance to tell the original lease writer he's a moron i'd happily take it.

Truly impaired.

Someone who lived at an address as long as two owners back managed to accidently have a parcel delivered to that property?

I think I'd be quizzing him about the contents.

I would be very wary of the contents of the next one.
