Watching Watford with swathes of empty seats…. on 01:41 - Aug 15 with 2038 views | Illinoisblue | I watched a bit of a few prem games today. While it’s great to see mostly full stadiums again you do wonder if in a couple weeks Covid numbers are going to explode

I could tell whenever Watford scored yesterday because the sound from the football went quiet. That said, I suspect their issue is that they are technically ‘sold out’ but people don’t bother going to most games. People buy (very reasonably priced) season tickets just to go to the big games.
Watching Watford with swathes of empty seats…. on 09:43 - Aug 15 with 1450 views | BlueyandCrazy | If Watford weren’t in the PL, they’d be getting 12-13000 max don’t forget. Their catchment area is effectively part of Arsenals; so traditionally they suffer from poor support for a town not much smaller than Ipswich. Not to mention Herts doesn’t have the same local community feel as Suffolk, given proximity to London / lots of incomes to the area etc. When Watford are in the PL, they tend to sell additional season tickets to non- Watford supporting families who just want to see PL football / big games. It’s also summer hols at the moment, so not surprised all not attending. Essentially- size and makeup of Watford’s support is way different to Towns.

Looks like their average attendances for when they were in The Championship more recently was about 16K. Not bad for a ground like Vicarage Road that has a capacity of 21.5K. [Post edited 15 Aug 2021 13:34]

It’s weird with sport, I’ve been reasonably cautious for 18 months and then football last week and yesterday with cricket on Friday and several pounds around that. A lot is going to depend on those not vaccinated getting those and people not going out if they are ill. Further restrictions in the Autumn would not be a surprise, especially once schools are back.

Yes, when it looked like they were going up….. Their hardcore support is about half ours at best, for the reasons given. Their underlying support is probably the lowest in the PL. The likes of Burnley and Palace, at least have the vast majority of their local town (Croydon for Palace) behind them, despite proximity of bigger teams. Watford just don’t - it’s full of Arsenal plus Spurs to an extent.

Their typical average attendance when they were cack (over many years and several periods in the 2nd division) was around 14k. It’s a bit of a stretch to suggest that is half ours.

Only 15k? Even with the 16k season tickets we sold?

Yeah, apparently Brett took the word of Cruncher as gospel on that. Did you miss the thread?

Do you think a win at Cheltenham might add a 1000? Funnily enough I spoke to a town fan who’d stopped going to PR a few seasons back, he enjoyed the Morecombe game so much / he got tickets for the Newport game!! Haven’t spoken to him since that loss!
