Richard Wright (Transfer fee) 09:19 - Aug 20 with 2493 views | OwainG1992 | Just been thinking as I'm reading about Ramsdale to Arsenal for 30 odd mill. How much would Wright cost now? Arguably similar in age and experience to Ramsdale.

Richard Wright (Transfer fee) on 09:31 - Aug 20 with 2146 views | rickw | Richard Wright had 2 England caps and had just starred in a team finishing 5th in the Premier League, Ramsdale has now been in an England squad but didn't play and has been relegated from the Premier League 2 seasons in a row. Personally I think Ramsdale is no better than what Arsenal already have so they're just wasting more money

Ahh Mr Barnett? Good point. Should add I believe Wright was a better keeper at this point in his career but I am biased.

Richard Wright (Transfer fee) on 10:00 - Aug 20 with 2029 views | N2_Blue | Oh dear Arsenal. They really get done when it comes to fees they've paid out. Ramsdale really is not all that. He is ok but 30 million for him is a joke in my opinion. Wouldn't be happy if i was a Gooner. GK is not their issue either way more serious problems all over the pitch. They've lost the plot with transfer dealings ever since Wenger left.

Ramsdale has actually been relegated with 3 different clubs (not all EPL sides), he went on loan to Chesterfield in the second half of the 2017-18 season and played 19 games they got relegated too, although I appreciate that it's not down to one player why a side gets relegated. I still believe Arsenal got rid of the wrong keeper, why they sold Martinez to Aston Villa still baffles me?! He's gone from strength to strength playing regular first team football and is Argentina's No.1. He's a far better all round keeper than Leno IMO. [Post edited 20 Aug 2021 10:50]

I still don't know how we ended up agreeing a £2m release clause. The reported £6m felt lowish for a keeper of his age with international caps.

One cap, if I remember rightly. The problem was the club was over a barrel when he signed his deal the previous summer, something really should have been sorted before it was but I assume his agents wanted to keep his options open given how highly he was rated.

Didn't he sign a new contract just a month or so before he left though? I know players have a lot of power in negotiations but still surprised we were willing to accept a release clause so far below his market value.

It was £2m only if Arsenal came in I think. Wright had only 1 year left on his new contract in June 2000 & was briefly on the transfer list after failing to agree a new deal. He only signed this when the £2m proviso if Arsenal came in was included, although this wasn't made public. If this hadn't happened, we wouldn't have got much more than £2m for a promising young Championship keeper. Celtic tried to buy him in the summer of 2000.

The summer before. He could have left for very little the previous summer as he was out of contract, if I remember the situation rightly.

You're right, he did sign that deal. I'd forgotten. Nevertheless, the situation was essentially the same. He had a year left on his contract and the club was over a barrel when it came to agreeing a deal. He could have walked the next summer, as was the situation the previous year when the 'big club release clause' was first inserted. Wright Signs! 18th May 2001 13:52As expected Richard Wright has signed a new deal with Town. The keeper will stay with Town until the end of the 2003/04 season. He is pretty much the last of the younger Town players to be tied down on a long-term deal. 0 Wright Signing Confirmed 3rd Aug 2000 16:24Richard Wright today scrawled his name across a contract bringing to an end months and weeks of discussion, rows, speculation, intrigue and eventually boredom. 0 Sheepshanks on Wright 21st Jun 2001 12:04David Sheepshanks has spoken about the Richard Wright transfer on local radio and revealed that Town had little choice but to accept the clause which has seen Arsenal allowed to talk to the Town keeper. 0

Ramsdales relegation record is still not patch on that of Hermann Hreiðarsson. Relegated from the Prem 5 times and once from the Championship. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermann_Hrei%C3%B0arsson [Post edited 20 Aug 2021 12:44]

Really? Stewart was nearly 30 & was an excellent 2nd tier forward who had one exceptional season in the PL when everything clicked for Town. He was part of an awful, relegated Sunderland side & then had 2 good seasons in the 2nd tier.

Such an odd signing when the could have had Matt Ryan or any number of other l Keepers for free. Doesn't feel like he coming in as a no 1 and 30 mil seems insane...a good keeper but 2 relegation in 2 years and nothing that suggests he's stand out.
