Got to be honest 10:18 - Dec 9 with 888 views | hype313 | None of the managers mentioned over the past few days fill me with much joy, seems like a list of has beens, have been found out and a few looking for a retirement gig. Manning is potentially interesting, but are the owners going to take a punt on a guy who's managed 25 games and was playing for Woodbridge Town and Leiston not that long ago? When they say big name, that concerns me as it sounds like a vanity statement and as we have witnessed previously, that can easily go tits up. All quite uninspiring, anyone happy to offer some snippets of positive appointments we could make?

Got to be honest on 10:21 - Dec 9 with 852 views | IpswichKnight | Why not? Arsenal took a punt on a manager who’d never coached in Europe and never played at the top level and it turned out he was a bit of a genius who could coach.

Eh? Wenger you're talking about? if so, he had managed Nancy and Monaco

Got this feeling he's going all out for Lee Johnson.

Yep, that's the concern.

As I said earlier, it's an interesting one, but given Ashton has said a big name or words to that effect, I can't see how Manning fits that bill, regardless of his achievements to date.

l hope not, ld sooner have Warnock. Manning is a no no,just not got the experience and lm not sure the players would respect enough.
Got to be honest on 10:39 - Dec 9 with 690 views | itfcjoe | I hope it just isn't a search for a big name, but if we end up falling back to one of Ashton';s contacts (i.e. Appleton or Johnson) then it will be pretty underwhelming. Not a lot seems to be happening yet, or getting out - think we could see McGreal for longer than people imagine

Agreed, although you would think they would want a statement signing in time for #packoutpr

Got to be honest on 10:41 - Dec 9 with 637 views | Churchman | I agree with your first, third and fourth paragraphs. With regard to Manning I’ve no idea about him, but him not playing to a particularly high level doesn’t concern me in the least. Ferguson, Mourinho, Wenger didn’t exactly shake the world as players, but they did tolerably well as managers. Yes, a good career might gain a little respect initially, but it didn’t help Bobby Moore or Bobby Charlton. The skill set is different. This is why the ‘big name’ idea irritates me. Lampard will only make a manager if he has management skills, not because he was a top player. He’s shown little sign of that for me to date. However, whoever gets appointed will get my support.

Did Ashton hint at a big name? I must have missed that. I think the type of appointment will be interesting. I think it may well be a head coach rather than manager, ie someone to fit with the sports science/performance/recruitment teams. I quite like the idea of Manning/Barry (Chelsea coach) or someone similar.

Our season could well be over by the time we appoint someone, if it isn't already. Might not be such a bad thing for the person coming in, having this seasons expectations lowered. But needless to say bs for us fans, with another rebuild project. Groundhog day.

Might as well have let Cook stay if that's the case. Would've been cheaper and would've either strengthened the case for his dismissal at some stage in the future, especially in the minds of those players that 'signed for him', or we do click and he delivers what he's promised.

I definitely think that's a possibility. This lot are pretty PR savvy/knowledgeable on fan engagement and chucking a new man in when we can still make/expect to make the play offs, who then fails, could be pretty disastrous in terms of selling next season. Although Ashton isn't going to come out and say it, he's been around football long enough to know realistically we are a couple of results away from the season being stone dead even if play offs are mathematically possible. The decision to sack Cook does seem to have been taken quite quickly and obviously without planning as no replacement had been sounded out. Whatever, he was not great so not sad to see him go. We will muddle along just as well with McGreal in charge I'm sure.
