The total number of NHS hospital beds in England has more than halved over the past 30 years, from around 299,000 in 1987/88 to 141,000 in 2019/20, while the number of patients treated has increased significantly. (Source: https://www.kingsfund.org.uk/publications/nhs-hospital-bed-numbers)

To be fair, hospital beds have been going down irrespective of who’s in power.

For a nation that isn’t that healthy or switched on about preventive health then that’s not ideal. Some might call it optimization or just-in-time healthcare but doesn’t help us cope with the unexpected.

Advances in tech and medicine reduced the need for beds - shorter hospital stays are better for recovery - Labour put a massive investment into the NHS and it was in as decent a state in 2010 as it has been in sixty years. It's a massive shame a lot of it was done through costly PPI schemes.

They also had an active and funded pandemic plan in place.

Then 2010 happened.

Two very different stories.

There’s degrees certainly – and it’s in the last 10 years that the dropping level will have really hit home.

But even with global advances for decades we’ve had fewer hospital beds (and the staff to man them) than almost all other developed countries. It’s been a choice.

Massive staff shortages due to rampant covid infection in hospitals, combined with no available beds, it looks very much like the Government gamble on herd immunity has gone very horribly wrong, as the science has repeatedly stated, vaccine alone will not be enough. Stay safe everyone and avoid the need for a visit to A&E if at all possible. I wonder what the answer could be?

Clearly states a three day lag in the hospital figures, although other sources indicate lag is 5 days.

The alarming stat, on the link you provided, is number of positive cases showing up 7 days after hospital admission. This figure is just for London hospitals.

There's some very strange stuff going on with the COVID dashboard in terms of updates.

There has been patchy reporting in terms of data because of Christmas and the bank holidays that have followed and NHS England hadn't reported any deaths at all between 24th and 29th December which is why the figures are so low.

However around lunchtime NHS England published a load of data in terms of hospitalisations and deaths which has caught up the backlog yet the COVID dashboard still claims it cannot be updated because of a delay in NHS England releasing the data.

NHS England reported an additional 365 deaths between 4pm on 24th December and 4pm on 29th December. See below for the raw data.

Explain how lumbering a publicly funded health service with massive amounts of private debt is a good idea, please.

Most of these contracts run for a good 50 years, so I'd be interested in the actual benefit of them versus simply paying for the hospitals up front.

We do of course need to be clear what a hospital bed actually is.

A former boss of mine back in the '90s proudly boasted he worked on this definition of a bed.

As posted upthread, there are hospital admission figures released by NHS England today,, however they are not showing on the Government dashboard.

It's also strange that the UK death figure is 332 (317 England) on the dashboard, when NHS England alone announced 365 today. It suggests that the dashboard is still lagging in deaths.

PFI would be a good idea if the Government were bankrupt and had no access to capital. Instead, the Government can raise as much as it wants to (when it wants to pay its friends).

The only people to benefit from PFI are the private companies profiting from investing in public services.

It is like saying you are better off taking a 2.5% loan over 20 years for a new car instead of paying up front because you won't have to spend £10K on the car when in fact you have £20K in your bank at 0.25% interest rate. Even before realising you then have to pay a further 2.5% insurance in case you can't pay the loan back. PFI is, was and always will be a dreadful idea for any but a bankrupt Government.
