Has anyone got a photo of the original? It didn’t make sense then and it doesn’t make sense now. Wasn’t it a weird dig about money and modern football or something?

Yeah, it made sense, but it was probably harsh to single them out for selling out given all they'd been through and football in general.

Rule #1: Know your audience. Very oddly misplaced. Lot of effort too, anyone know who made it?

I do. I did a piece at the time, for the column in the paper rather than on here, if I remember rightly, getting their side of the story, but anonymously as it led to a fair bit of bad feeling. Probably unfair of me to break that confidence.

to be fair they are just trying to get the best deal on their asset.

We would (or should) do the same in their position.

If anything we may end up thanking them as this should accelerate the process of us signing him on a perm contract.

I actually couldn't really see the fuss.

It was just intended as bit of light-hearted ribbing.

No, I thought some of the reaction was over the top too. I think from their side it was mainly as they'd had such a struggle to get from virtual disappearance to where they were that it was a little insensitive to have pop at them for selling out re the Amex sponsorship.

It was all a bit bizarre but in fairness we found something which really triggered Brighton fans that wasn't homophobic

The double-negative knocked all sense out of it, for me:
"Football isn't one of the things money can't buy."

So... football is one of the things money can buy?
Everyone already know that, right? So what exactly was their point?

Exactly this, it’s want CEO/DoF are there for - protect the financial side of the club.

Ashton would be doing the exact same if roles reversed.

We were extending deals on Drinan & Bishop in the summer to protect the assets, and allowed us to recoup money for them.

Just part of the business side.

I was at that game albeit in the adjacent stand with Brighton fans, my son lives in Brighton and was given two tickets.
Everybody around me thought it was amusing.
They had the last laugh, we got stuffed and the only person sitting down whilst they made merry was yours truly.

It was a reference to the Mastercard ad at the time about things money can't buy, football - as exemplified by the Amex, according to the banner - not being one of them. Clunky and, as you say, not something unique to Brighton.

I fear it says a lot about a section of our support that this is only the second most embarrassing banner in our history.
