Napoleon was 5’ 5”. The Kaiser was 5’ 3”. Of course the despot and height theory is a bit challenged by Henry 8th who was well over 6 foot and bumped off about 60k people during his reign. Wellington, by contrast, was 5’ 10”, though not everybody thought he was a good dude once he went into politics.

Interesting. How tall was Edward 1st? That Thatcher person? If indeed, it was a person. Edit: Idi? Pol Pot? [Post edited 11 Mar 2022 23:50]

Little men on 00:02 - Mar 12 with 2284 views | You_Bloo_Right | In 1914 the mean height of adult men by country was: Country Mean Height Austria 5' 2" Italy 5' Russia 5' The mean height in those countries by 2014 was 5' 5"/5' 6". So it seems really that Hitler, Stalin, Lenin and Mussolini were relative giants compared to Putin as they were all 4 or 5 inches taller than the mean whereas Vlad stands pretty much in the middle.

In jest I would say there is a lethal battalion in waiting there. On a more serious note there is a Charitable Trust that looks out for ex-jockeys. I believe nowadays employers are compelled to pay into it? I may be mistaken but I think that's right. It's a funny life many live isn't it; one where they're are fairly isolated from the outside world and are conditioned from a young age. Hence the notoriety of being unable to mix socially with people outside of their bubble. Once their competitive days are spent many are turfed out with few life skills, turning to alcoholism and often homelessness.

They can be a real mixed blessing to look after when they're ill. On one hand, they're as hard as nails and *will* get out of bed and try and do things bit on the other hand they *will* also wait untucks they're REALLY sick until they seek help. I remember looking looking after a rather elderly former jockey who still rode horses but fell off one day and fractured pretty much all his ribs. The subsequnt peaumonia was somewhat exacerbated by him steadfastly insisting he had no pain and refusing all painkillers. He spent WEEKS in hospital, several of which were on a ventilator. And he still went home. And insisted on walking to the front door.

An Indian chap was in the bed opposite me on one of my hospital stays. He was a Newmarket based jockey and he'd broken his collar bone and some ribs amongst some other injuries. I kid you not his phone didn't stop ringing the whole time with his bosses calling to ask when he was returning to work. He must have been someone in the racing world but I wouldn't know. He was a serious looking muvver and bad tempered and could not wait to leave despite his injuries. I only finally got him talking when we both ordered the dhal from the lunchtime menu and we discovered simultaneously how damn good it was. We both looked up at each other at the same time with the same happy surprised face! Who says hospital food is always bad? [Post edited 12 Mar 2022 0:59]

One of Edward 1st nicknames was Longshanks and he was over 6 foot. I saw the Thatcher thing reasonably close to a couple of times and I would guess average height

Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh is most of the way there, Indira Ghandi’s security law was incredibly repressive too. And, more to the point, how come no one has mentioned Paul Hurst??
