Progressive nationalism in action 14:04 - May 29 with 4974 views | tractordownsouth | SNP MP demonstrating her left-wing credentials by arguing that Scotland shouldn't be helping poor people from other countries... how is this any different from Nigel Farage and co calling for foreign aid cuts or blaming all our problems on Romanians and Bulgarians?

So you support removing the windfall tax revenues from low-income residents of England, Wales and Northern Ireland?

No, he simply understands what fairness and/or taking the p1ss looks like in a global economy. You’ve jumped through some hoops to conclude disagreeing with you means you must be anti-windfall energy tax and/or supporting vulnerable folk from any country. You’ve also limited scope by framing a wider macro issue with endless micro solutions to a single short term option. GB News and Talk TV would pay good money for a presenter of such calibre. I haven't jumped through any hoops. The MP is arguing for 90% of the windfall tax revenue to be spent in Scotland, despite the excessive profits coming from paying customers across the UK. Keeping the lion's share of the revenue in Scotland would take it from the rest of the UK and therefore remove support away from poor people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, condemning people to (even worse levels of) poverty How is that progressive?

Maybe, just maybe, because we p1ssed on our own doorstep and dragged Scotland into the Brexit mess, and now demand they continue to honour a union that is practically an abusive relationship? Maybe it’s because a windfall tax is largely a short term solution for one sector and for real progressive change we need to address the behaviour of corporations and the continual gap in wealth they are facilitating in a free market spiralling well into disaster capitalism? If you posted this on Twitter Tom Hunt MP would retweet it, that’s how poor your take is. Listen again. She queries why other businesses who have seen major profits during the pandemic, such as Amazon and Serco, have not been hit badly rather than just oil and gas. At no point on the clip posted does she call for the money to be solely spent in Scotland either, though she does make a political point about how much an independent Scotland could raise using the charge.

She says that it's “income made in Scotland” so “It feels very unfair that Scotland is having to pay for the entirety of the UK” - implying that non-Scottish households shouldn't get the benefit of windfall tax revenue despite paying the record-high bills that contributed to the profits. This is a shameful policy which would plunge English, Welsh and Northern Irish people into poverty. If calling me a loon because I've listened to her argument is the best you've got then so be it.

No, she’s saying why just place the windfall tax against oil and gas companies? Why not stretch it out and include other companies who have recorded massive profits? Edit - Profits, not products [Post edited 29 May 2022 16:13]

I don’t support or approve card machines in shops that ask me to round up my purchase for charity so they can take credit and dodge tax. I don’t support the idea that we collectively have to pay to put food in the food bank box in supermarkets because the businesses make more annual profit than we live on in a lifetime. Do these things mean I am not progressive because I see through short term solutions, gesture politics and whitewashed marketing that offsets the problem from those who caused and uphold it to those largely not responsible and more likely to fall victim to it? Does it mean I want all poor people to die? Of course it doesn’t. Think critically or stop wasting everyone’s time. [Post edited 29 May 2022 16:20]

The first two paragraphs are separate issues. I completely agree we need to put more measures in place alongside the windfall tax and other sectors such as housing, transport and the environment also need to be looked at but that's not the point being made by the SNP MP. She's talking solely about the windfall tax and saying that revenues should be kept in Scotland, which would take them away from English, Welsh and Northern Irish households. I realise I'm being a bit of a hypocrite by mentioning a separate issue after my first paragraph but as an aside it's also not very progressive or environmentally friendly to be relying on oil and gas revenues to fund a post-independence Scotland.

They aren’t separate issues, they are all related with causation, correlation and societal attitudes that feed into a bigger system. It is ironic you seem to pick and choose when something is an isolated matter with outcome (see this thread) vs when it’s not. The point made in the tweet you linked is also not close to what you suggested though, so even then the above doesn’t apply. You are simply being disingenuous. Is it no wonder your only cheerleader in the thread is Glassers?! Chalk it up as a loss and move on. Like the time you tried to claim XR block ambulances, which followed a very similar pattern of (information + soundbite + opinion) - what actually happened or was said = wrong conclusion In general you are better than that, and this post is disappointing. She’s arguing for it not just coming mainly from a Scottish sector when there are plenty of other UK businesses that should top up the coffers. This would mean more money to help everyone and not mean England pillages Scotland’s economy. You are being disingenuous. There’s little else to add.
