Corps and greenwashing aren’t going to save us and it does largely feel pointless/defeatist to do anything.
The money tap is the answer. You have the power to turn it slightly, and enough of us can turn it off completely to force change. Pollution based industries and/or wealth extraction companies only operate because we allow them too though ur wallets.
Money is the problem. Somehow, we need to get to the point that we value other species, ourselves and the planet we live on more than profit and economic growth. I’m not sure how we get there, but the likes of George Monbiot have some ideas.
Knowing we’re going through a massive increase in extinctions is nothing new. Scientists have been studying this and publishing a grim record for many years. Species are currently dying off at rates orders of magnitudes larger than average, and that doesn’t even account for those species we don’t know about. We’re undeniably fecking the planet. The best thing that could happen for it and all other life is if we became extinct, sadly.

Agreed.
Interesting how the relationship between money and happiness starts to erode when we are materially comfortable let alone financially secure. From that point, it’s an addiction or an irrelevance, but rarely a source of happiness.
I think we’re just about learning that the quality of our time on earth and our relationships is the real goal. But we might just be a little too late to finally drop the money delusion.

Yeah but just the weather!
Terrifying thing is with past mistakes of humanity at least we could stop, look at ourselves and change course relatively fast.
We do not have the power, technology or ability to do that with nature and the planet. My only hope is we pull our heads out of this tinpot fascist scapegoat crap (which is a 100% intentional power grab for a select self-interested few to rule whatever is left of the world), acknowledge factual debate over emotion-led whatteraboutery and change on a large enough scale to help each other through the forthcoming dark period for humanity.
What these hate filled Brexit tub thumpers fail to realise is the imaginary British exceptionalism will quickly go out the window when our cities/counties are uninhabitable, we have eco refugees fighting for human rights in their own country and a minimum amount of food/water becomes our number one priority over consumer luxuries. Ironic justice maybe for those who actively fell for it and got us here, but really they are victims as much as anyone, alas maybe no so innocent ones.
All could have been avoided if humans weren't largely stupid. We've had the same brain for 10k years, and are no different to the same idiots who ran around massacring Jewish populations to appease God and get rid of the bubonic plague (who ironically spread more illness in the process) in the 13th-18th centuries.
We look at the Medieval times as idiotic and savage, but the future human population will look at the industrial-to-digital age as far FAR worse.

Money is the problem, but more because of how it's distributed. There is an argument we need to live on more than profit and economic growth but, without those - particularly the latter - then society will find itself in the position we're in now and then globaql warming moves even further out of people's minds.

How would the end of the free market concept of 'infinite growth on a finite planet' result in the same situation we are in now? Genuinely curious question as it flies in the face of common sense. Unless I've misread.

George is a good egg, looking forward to reading regenesis at some point, whether these ideas catch on or not who knows but it’s good they are being explored and does give some hope in an otherwise grim situation.
As you say our relationship with money is a problem. Until we get away from the idea that more numbers in your bank account gives you the right to extract more resources from a finite planet shared by everyone, then it will be hard to make the progress that is needed.

Beautifully and succinctly put - thank you, sad as it may be.
It makes me cry to think of the mess we have made of our home and of ourselves in the delusional and addictive pursuit of an abstract representation of actual wealth.

Apologies, was more the key would be a more even spread of the money we have than trying to persistently try and earn more. Why does the world need billionaires?
The key focus has to be power generation. We have so much renewable resources at our disposal but still have an obsession over oil and gas. Then there's somehow making vegetarian options more palatable to meat eaters, but also the issue of potentially putting animal farmers out of business so having to consider incentives there as well.
…. The talked of 100s of baby swallows throwing themselves from nests that had overheated to their deaths due to the unprecedented 40+ heat in hatching season
It does feel like something very serious, and perhaps irreversible is happening; I wonder if the western states of the US may be a real showcase alongside South Asia:
And of course the populists politicians in Brazil and the US, and the dictators in Russia and the Middle East are so negative for humanity and the planet, they distract us from global warming, and try to sow division when we need to come together:
What is so short sighted from anti-immigration and anti-climate false prophets such as Trump and Farage… is that people migrate to say the UK, due to the English Language, and due to Family connections and correctly that the UK is more racially integrated…. But what people need to realise is that people migrate in their millions soon to get away from extreme heat and failing eco systems… it’s not rocket science
