The more I read about Leigh the more he seems 'first choice'. 13:49 - Jun 21 with 2379 views | STYG | Fourth best left back / wing back in League One last season across a number of stats. Ex-managers speak highly of his attitude and how he should be playing at a higher level. Comes across as very intelligent and grounded. Can clearly defend and as an ex-striker can get forward and his highlight reel shows some very good goals and assists. Massive upgrade on Penney in terms of most of the stats McKenna would be looking at. Ultimately if we end up with Leigh and Burns with Penney and KVY as back ups I'd be more than happy with that. Seems Ndaba can cover CB and LWB as well. I don't think Penney is anywhere near the quality we need, but having looked at Leigh in detail now I don't think we are going to be targeting someone else to come in front of him, so perhaps it's now just about Celina / similar player and a top drawer striker. Had assumed yesterday Leigh may be one of two left wing backs to compete but seems to me there's more of an air of McKenna seeing him as the ideal player there. Could be wrong! I may well be wrong and he might have to fight it out with someone else for that spot but time will tell. Fingers crossed he’s a signing in the same mould as Burns where he massively exceeds most peoples expectations!

Why wouldn’t a player who he scored 50-some goals at this level/the one above in the last 4 seasons *not* be our first choice? Honestly who else do you think we could be in for? The more I read about Leigh the more he seems 'first choice'. on 14:09 - Jun 21 with 2169 views | Swansea_Blue | There seems a bit of a contradiction from what I've read so far. He says he sees himself as a good fit to KM's passing style, but also that he struggled in Holland because of their focus on passing style and prefers to be more direct and physical. But maybe I'm reading too much into it.

Playing in the Eredivisie is very different from playing League one is probably what he meant.

I don't recall reading he struggled to pass in Holland. I did see that he felt his face didn't fit as an English player in Holland and Dutch players would get preferred, even when Kaikai would be the best player in training. Likewise, he said (at Crewe I think) that a loanee from Bournemouth (Romanian?) wouldn't get a look in. Clearly from being so highly rated at City's academy and them playing a similar style to us he has it in his locker. His worst stats appeared to be his passing. but then when you see how Morecambe play, how isolated the striker can be (not just against us) and how poor their midfield was at reading passes or retaining possession, it's not a huge surprise.

He was in Man City's Academy so in his younger days played a lot of possession football. I think he found adapting back difficult in Holland, especially as they didn't appreciate this more direct attributes. I have no doubt he'll be fine with a pre-season here.

I'm sure we hope that every player will ultimately force their way into the side, but if there was no KVY for example, I don't think we'd be looking to go out and spend £2m on a player that could be better than Burns. There it's probably a case of bringing someone in that's a capable understudy. The feeling yesterday for me was that we'd get two players in there of similar ability and allow them to compete, but then that changed in my mind reading up on him to what Phil has now said. Leigh in there, with Humphreys being looked at and Penney sticking around I guess. If Humphreys is unconvincing then I'd imagine a similar player to Leigh comes in and Penney can move on.

I think I understand what he means, having been on a football tour to Amsterdam thirty odd years ago. The Dutch teams' philosophy was to let the opposition attack, and then attack them when they lost possession. They were completely shocked to see our midfielders clattering into, and fouling, them. No doubt there is a bit more pressing at a higher level in Holland but physicality didn't appear to be a feature of the game at a lower level, and Leigh suggests that is still the case even at a higher level. It's probably a bit of a throw-back to total football. I might add that both Muhren and Thyssen weren't physical in the English sense of the word. [Post edited 21 Jun 2022 14:40]

I agree that the fans' response has been a little more underwhelmed/underwhelming than might be justified. But having lost Bonne and Norwood, it seems to me that there's no reason why we couldn't be in for another striker of the same stature as the Pig had last season off the back of that really good season he had. Clearly we'd be hoping for a different outcome, but there are a number of L1 strikers who succeeded last year that we could easily be in for.

Isn't the point that he can do both? Fits with the tactical flexibility. I thought his difficulties in Holland were t What he described as willingness (or at least acceptance of) conceding if you have tried to play 'football' there is time for both isn't there? You need someone who can ve tough in L1 but I think his technical ability must be there if he started at Man City

Yeah, seems fair enough and thanks to all who replied. I probably was misreading it a bit. He certainly shouldn’t be shabby technically after coming through the ranks at Man C and I’m sure KM knows exactly what he’s getting. I’m looking forward to seeing how he fits in and he seems like a top bloke as well.

Personally think KVY has a role to play... Albeit a squad role.. He's very versatile.. There'll be injuries, suspensions and squad rotation at some point... Good player to have on the bench , imo. He can cover 2-3positions , if needed... Got a feeling Burns will need resting at some point, too. Lad hasn't had much of a break since coming back from injury... Imo, atm, KVY is as good as anyone else we've got, for the RWB, back up role... I'd keep him onboard, tbh...

I think you're right and Leigh will be the main man on that left side, I am also it appears, in a minority of people who think that Penney is a more than capable squad player so happy for him to stay, especially with a full pre-season of McKenna. I also think with Ladapo in the middle who's a little better in the air, Penney may have a role at times where we can utilise the different attributes in the squad. KVY will be great back up for Donacien and Burns as he seems capable in both positions, so wouldn't let him go, he was getting back on top of things by the end of the season (although granted there wasn't much riding on those latter appearances).
The more I read about Leigh the more he seems 'first choice'. on 09:40 - Jun 22 with 870 views | Darth_Koont | He definitely looks an interesting signing based on his career. Obviously with the Man City start and then with the Scottish and Dutch sorties. But looks like he’s been trying to find his niche and isn’t afraid to go his own way. Completely different player but similar vibe to Shefki when he came to us. A player who traveled around looking for the right place and/or looking to reach his potential. Hope that feeling becomes reality. Most importantly, I trust McKenna’s judgement on player potential/development. That’s presumably where he’s most comfortable and knowledgable anyway.

Leigh with both Humphreys and Penney as cover/competition looks a decent solution on the left. Even an opportunity that all 3 could be on the pitch at the same time, rather than doubling/tripling up on one position.

The more I've heard from him and seen clips, the more I like. I think he could surprise a lot of people this year and turn out to be an excellent acquisition.

Hope so. Although it occurs to me that predicting how players will do is probably less accurate than reading tea leaves. So I shouldn’t get ahead of myself. But the LCB/LB/LWB area has been an issue and an overall weak spot for a long time. So, probably about time we got the right player in there. And I reckon Humphreys in particular could be excellent support there too. Plus Penney who didn’t have too many chances at LWB but looked much, much better there than in the LB role.

Can't say I'd be too unhappy with Leigh and Burns with KVY as cover on both sides and Humphreys as a potential left sided solution. Donacien is there if we need a traditional right back as well. Certainly seems more than adequate if Leigh is deemed to be left-sided Burns and given his stats, background and some of the clips we've seen, he seems to be quick, determined, able to defend and beat players and can finish. A lot of similarities with Burns. Even if his crossing is erratic, it's not like that wasn't an issue for Burns for large parts of last season. Wes real weakness was crossing positions where he'd either score from there, play an incredible ball for Bonne to tap in or fire a rocket into touch on the far side.
