I did some work with charity out there working with children labeled as "child witches". Worst of all where the church leaders who would charge money to parents to offer "deliverance" to their children.
Many of those poor kids, often whose parents were in poverty, would get abandoned and worse. Sickening. |  |

In western culture, the first born is the senior twin. In Yoroba culture the second born is, the theory being that when were born, the senior one pushes the first out to check if it's safe or not to come out.

It certainly was an eye-opener for me how big the church is in Nigeria.
I’ve done a bit of work with a Nigerian doctor who is particularly passionate about sickle cell anaemia (basically Nigeria is the epicentre of the gene pool that produces it) and who runs an outreach programme. Coming from our secular society, I asked him why it was run through the church and he replied how else would it be run? Without the infrastructure, protections, rights and government commitments we take for granted in fully developed societies?
Clearly, society shouldn’t be organised by religion at all. And the risk of dangerous views and a lack of tolerance for others grows large. But evidently the church’s strength in Nigeria is also through the many gaps it fills (and no doubt exploits too). |  |

Sickle cell is a horrible one. One of my colleagues died of it - he was healthy as, used to run, go the gym etc. One day went to work to be told he'd dropped dead over the weekend. Was only around 30 ffs and a real nice lad too. | |
