Brazil over throws fascism 23:31 - Oct 30 with 2830 views | HARRY10 | The corrupt Bolsonaro has lost the election - with shades of Trump "“It’s fraud without a doubt, they manipulated the count. The armed forces must intervene,” said João Reis, a 50-year-old electrician. And if they don’t? “The population must take to the streets to demand military intervention so that we don’t hand power over to the communists.” Righties don't seem to like democracy, do they ? And this odious sht denies climate change and states that women should be paid less "Bolsonaro said, "If I see two men kissing in the street, I will beat them." And stated political opponents should be shot "Brazil has had what is arguably the worst pandemic policy response in the world, driven by its far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro. The president’s choices in handling COVID-19 have triggered an unparalleled tragedy in the country, with potentially catastrophic implications worldwide" Up there with Johnson in levels of incompetence and deaths [Post edited 30 Oct 2022 23:57]

Brazil over throws fascism on 06:56 - Oct 31 with 2622 views | Pendejo | That word "incompetence" all depends on what the agenda was doesn't it? if the agenda was truly to save lives, then yes, by all means use incompetence. If, however, the agenda was a thinning out of "financial liabilities" - reduction of outgoing pensions and benefits ( including NHS resorces) then there was a level of competence. But as this is all conspiracy theorist territory... Let's reign it back to a lack of competence. The problem with Bolsonaro et al is they are so into capitalism and climate change denial that the tipping point has passed, they now know that "so what the hell more of the same"

They have moved from a deranged Trump like figure to someone convicted of corruption. For a large Percentage of the population neither candidate represents them. I guess they got the least bad result.

A bit disingenuous to mention a conviction that has been reversed on appeal without mentioning the reversal on appeal bit. I'm sure you've got your reasons.

My apologies. My reasons for posting was to state that there was a huge polarizing of the two candidates, and a large percentage of the population support neither candidate. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Unfortunately the corruption preceded and runs deeper than just him. They really should be a very wealthy nation with their resources. Hopefully good news for the environment and the Amazon as well.

Turnout was just over 79%, that's anything but feeble. Since records began in 1906, the UK has only twice surpassed that figure in General Elections, in 1950 and 1951. None this century have exceeded 69%.

Fair to mention that as in most South American countries voting is compulsory.

And is compulsory in Brazil. Worth noting that the number of people who selected "none of the above" was twice as many as the margin between them. That's before you get to the 20% who either didn't vote or made invalid votes.

Didn't know that. Even so, turnout is about the same as the previous few Presidential elections, not notably down.

Only compulsory for people of working age. They don't have a formal none of the above option in Brazil. People can cast blank votes (which are treated as a valid vote equivalent to none of the above in Colombia), but the number of them (1.8m) was less than the difference between the two candidates (2.1m). There were 3.9m invalid votes though.
Brazil over throws fascism on 10:15 - Nov 1 with 1850 views | StokieBlue | This probably isn't done yet, Bolsonaro hasn't spoken in public since the result, he's gauging his support before he attempts to call the election corrupt and keep power for himself. I have a friend who is heavily into Brazilian politics for personal reasons and he is furious that Lula is in, sees him as corrupt and is simply waiting for Bolsonaro to declare the result void and continue on. It could get incredibly messy, possibly even violent. SB
