I’m not sure any of the alleged 200,000 casualties so far are due to carbon though.

Think people have misunderstood my post considerably

Putin has acted appallingly and without justification,

The Russians have committed atrocities, killed thousands and thousands, and it is the human cost in lost lives and ruined lives that should be the primary focus, and they must be held to account.

But my point was that the Russian invasion has yet another grotesque angle, and for me it is the wanton destruction of homes, buildings, cities. And critically the damage to our planet the Russians are causing. It’s 2022, every nation needs to stop aggression, stop the conflict, focus on the priority of saving our planet and providing a sustainable, just and equal world society.

The article I was quoting was from Ukraine calling out Russia invasions unreported and catastrophic ‘side’ consequence:

“The war has led directly to emissions of 33 million tons of greenhouse gases that warm the Earth's atmosphere, claimed Ruslan Strilets, Ukraine's environmental protection minister.
"Russia has turned our natural reserves into a military base. Russia is doing everything to shorten our and your horizons. Because of the war, we will have to do even more to overcome the climate crisis," he said.

This should be a major part of the narrative.

All fair. What to do though? Unfortunately Putin’s land grab has to be resisted and he couldn’t be talked down. But yes, another example of how stupid we are as a species. Intelligent but simultaneously stupid.

It's facts about the environment.

Well the Ukrainians see it as one of many tactics to pressure and ridicule Russia. That’s why their delegation are roasting Russia in Egypt at COP, based on the environmental and carbon disaster of Putins war.

Agree it’s hardly going to put him off; but I think it is a good tactic, and hopefully resonates with Russian people and supporters.

The wanton killing, atrocities, life ruining, asset and planetary destruction of this conflict has to end immediately. It’s a barbaric waste.

“Russia's invasion of Ukraine has caused a large amount of warming gases to be released into the atmosphere, Ukraine has claimed at the UN COP27 climate summit in Egypt.
The amount is the equivalent of adding nearly 16 million cars to the UK's roads for two years.
Ukraine said it is collecting evidence of environmental crimes with which to sue Russia.
It also claimed precious animal and plant life has been destroyed.

Again my post wasn’t suggesting that there shouldn’t be a large scale resistance of Putin! Putin is the aggressor here, he is the one who has caused this humanitarian disaster and the side consequence of an environmental disaster.

What to do? Well this is another front for the world community to call Russia to account. And a strong tactic from the Ukrainians - 100 million tonnes of Carbon, habitat and species loss - that’s CO2 footprint is underestimated and yet the same the output of all road traffic in the UK a year. Waste.

Everyone needs to amplify the narrative of this invasion being just such a wanton, wasteful, avoidable destruction of lives and environment needs to be amplified. A message to get to the Russian people who are brainwashed to be numb to the death as a consequence of war, but can’t be misinformed about the complete waste of resources.

Every decision humans make need to be fundamentally rebalanced.

Ordinary Russians aren’t hearing anything that the rest of the world is saying, and those that are, end up with it being drowned out by the official message or falling out of a window in a high rise building.

Russians are scared, and not of global warming.

The only thing that will stop Putin, is a military coup and one general with a MP443 Grach.

I was sent a video of a Russian aquanetinec of mine being interviewed in Russian TV in the street saying how the invasion of Ukraine was justified and how she hopes "our soldiers will triumph".

She's lived in the UK for the past twenty years and was visiting her father, whois a retired RussiaN GeneraL

She's either brainwashed and believes what she said or terrified of repercussions her father may suffer had she said anything to the contrary.

As bad as that sounds, global CO2 emissions are around 35 BILLION tons per year. So we're talking 0.1% here or 0.2% including the rebuild.

I don't mean to dismiss your point as millions of tons is certainly bad enough and needs to be factored in. Just saying that the global problem is on a frighteningly massive scale that we'd need 1,000 Ukraine-like wars every year to match it.

In fact, thinking about catastrophic climate breakdown (and the resulting chaos/death/migration) as 1,000 times worse than Ukraine is probably a good way to go.

All the same he is one, and regrettably perhaps a more typical example of what each one of might become if we had his power because it seems that power not only amplifies capabilities but delusions as well.

That's what I am not sure of. After the Ukraine invasion, Putin's popularity shot up to like 90% or something among the Russian people. Three possible reasons for that

1) The polls are false
2) They are brainwashed by Russian media (Highly possible)
3) They are blindly nationalistic and love a good invasion of a neighbouring country

Great post.

Just to repeat it’s important in this thread we don’t lose sight that the biggest issue is the humanitarian crisis caused by the invasion by Putin. The deaths, and suffering.

But to your point the Ukraine conflict, or the equivalent emission from all UK cars in a year, is a tiny fraction of global emissions. 0.2% as you quote.

And it shows the scale of change and effort needed. Change is possible we had 51% wind power generation recently in the UK for a day, it used to be Coal! And at a higher %.

Every world citizen needs to start taking responsibility for their CO2 footprint. Pressuring their governments. Need to stop saying ‘well no point me doing it if no one else does’ because you add lots of 0.2% together it makes a difference.

Because your point of considering the impact of global complex systems breakdown as 1000 times as hideous as the Ukraine conflict is very well made.

But of course the horrendous reality is that global environmental issues will no doubt lead to war and conflict over resources.

Cheers and agree totally.

Re: your last line, yes, I'm also factoring in wars amid the chaos. Globally, climate change won't cause socio-economic problems like they predominantly will be in developed countries. For much of the rest of the world especially in heavily populated areas many people will be fighting over food, water and habitable territory. Or at the very least dealing with the effect of unimaginable forced migration that makes a mockery of notional borders.

But he is the same species as you. Saying otherwise is burying your head in the sand. We as a species have to work out how we deal with such people or stop them ever being able to exert such influence and evil. Impossible? Yes probably, but unless we do it will be the end of humanity, whether that it is in 100 year or a million as there will likely be members of our species worse than Putin in the future....history is evident of that but now we are so advanced we are more dangerous to each other.

Or like people in HK, large proportions massively oppose what's going on but have to toe the line publicly until such time that they can escape amicably or the status quo changes.

I know that was then, but it could be again..
