To put this into context, in 1980-81 season when we came runners up in Division 1, our average attendance was 24600.

That's fantastic isn't it?
I was lucky enough to be in the crowd when there was just over 38,000 at Portman Road v Leeds in the mid 70s.
Pretty sure it couldn't have been safe by todays standards as everybody in North Stand (standing only) were crushed against each other, you had to choose to keep arms above your head or down by your side as couldn't move an inch!
Maybe the time will come, if we keep doing well that our capacity may be increased again one day. | | | |

Was discussing with junior earlier and looked up the attendances. First three rounds for 80/81 EUFA Cup win were 17-20k, QF v St Etienne was 30k, SF v Colonge was 25k and final v Alkmaar was 28k. Highest league attendance was 32k v Liverpool.

Remove the fear and I reckon it would be quite loud.

Yep, I'm struggling to see much beyond a very frustrating game where Oxford realise a point is a good result and do anything and everything to make that happen whilst the ground is near-silent with the exception of impatient tuts and groans every time something doesn't come off. |  |

Strange how large crowds do not generate a good atmosphere, best atmosphere I have been at Portman Road are the night games……..not forgetting Bolton in the play off semi final, but the team had a lot to fight for that night |  | | |
