Cricket - Rehan Ahmed looks a very decent leg spin bowler 12:50 - Dec 17 with 1841 viewsChrisd

Showed maturity for an 18 year old and bowled some terrific balls. Very encouraging.

I was reading about him before the test. It’s great that he’s had an opportunity to make his debut with relatively little pressure. I gather he’s an exciting batsman too. A real prospect.

Pleased to see his end figures. I woke up and checked the score and he had been whacked about a bit in his first 5 or so overs.

Looking forward to seeing him develop. He needs a full season at Leicester for sure. I suspect he'll be relying on sub-continent tours before he gets another go, but there's plenty of time for him.

Touched by greatness. He could be exactly what we’ve been missing since Swann (obviously completely different bowler but decent bat, very good spin option.)
Could be playing for the next 20 years or gone in six months!

That's brilliant. Warney would have been made up to see him make his debut.

Only the 5 wickets in that second innings!

That's a great video and an amazing moment for a 13 year old.

RIP Warney.

Ahmed did well today, Warne would have loved that.

No problem - I think Warne was the cricketer I detested most, the dance on the balcony - plus generally getting all our batsmen out. When he started commentating it was clear how knowledgeable he was and how clearly he saw the game, probably list him in my top few favourite cricketers of all time now! RIP Warney.

Agreed, so bloody smug with it too but always loveable of the filed and as you say, hugely knowledgeable and a insightful pundit and coach.

Warney for me is the greatest cricketer of all time but my word how I hated watching him tear through our batting line up.

As for Ahmed, IDR there being such a buzz about an Enhlish spin bowlwer before. Giles was good and worked hard to make the most of what he had. Swann was a v good spin bowler but not as good as those produced on the sub continent. Ahmed looks like he could be really exciting, made up for the lad.

As for the 3rd Test, barring a collapse it's won, what a display, right across the series. Great stuff. There is nothing better than cricket, not even football.

Feel absolutely the same.

R.I.P. Shane Warne.

The last England spin bowler there was buzz about in the early stages of their Test career was Monty Panesar. His early figures were remarkable, but the attention was just as much on his comedy aspects (dropped catches, wide eyed, gangly windmilling celebrations, and, let's be honest, the fact that he wore a patka and had a beard as an adherent Sikh). He was frequently publicly criticised or mocked by coaches and senior players over his lack of natural athleticism and whenever he "looked unfit".

He had a major mental health breakdown.

The contrast with the approach from Stokes and McCullum is so pronounced. Hopefully Rehman Ahmed's obvious talent can be nurtured and he can enjoy playing, and continuing to excel, for England.

In the wake of the Yorkshire CCC racism scandal, and the treatment that Azeem Rafiq received at the hands of senior players (again with devastating mental health consequences) the ECB really needs a British Asian superstar to emerge and be treated with respect.

Interesting to note that Ben Duckett is one of the beneficiaries of the new approach. A player who had his England career ended because he stood up to one of the dominant senior players in the old era, now welcomed back and given licence.

I am reminded of Shane Warne comment about Monty to the effect that "he has played 35 tests he has played the same test 35 times'

the interference being that he hadn't, to been allowed to, develop as a bowler

There was always so much emphasis on what Monty couldn't do (field, bat) and so much pressure was put on him to reach Test standard in those disciplines, that it just sapped his life and energy. He was at his best as an attacking bowler, but that is a high risk/high reward approach, and when he was under such attack on the other fronts it is understandable that he shrank, rather than grew as time went on.

It is obviously very, very early, but Abrar Ahmed and Rehman Ahmed emerging in the same Test Series seems to have a beautiful synchronicity to it. They both have a joyful delight in their cricket at the moment, and I hope they are both able to keep that flame alive.

Agree about the two young spinners, there sheer love of the game is so heart warming

Have you read Warnies book?

I love the story of how he learn to bowl the flipper

The bowler I loved to hate. In an alternate universe Warney and Richie Beneaud are still doing a commentary dream team followed by a bowling masterclass at lunch and tea.
