I missed out on an internal role today at my company 20:59 - Feb 9 with 2360 views | davblue | Been told I’m not quite ready for it. They aren’t going to go external or internal and are going to put it on hold for a bit a revisit in 6 months and open the job up again. In the meantime they want me to help interview resource for the team I work in to get a secondment in for my role so i can manage them and learn more about people management. I can deliver some change that I don’t have any time to do with my day to day job. On top of that learning about another process that I would have been managing. All sounds promising on paper but senior management are the ones who have stopped me getting the role rather than my direct report. I’m starting to wonder if it’s worth me looking elsewhere, I’m not unhappy in my role it was the next logical step in my development but if senior bods don’t have faith I’m concerned that the opinion won’t change and I’m wasting my time?
I missed out on an internal role today at my company on 21:11 - Feb 9 with 2264 views | Churchman | You may be right about them, you may be wrong. Despite how you feel, my advice is stay with it for now and to be as professional as you can possibly be. Do as they ask and do what you can in the most organised, effective way you can. If you decide in the intervening time that you need to move on, they don’t have to know that. Changing jobs is always easier when in work than out of it. Also whatever else you take on in the coming months is bound to add to your CV. Most people in employment have to deal with disappointment as you have and it always looks a little different further down the line. Patience, which Ive been dreadfully short of in my time to my detriment, can work for you. It did for me in the end. This is just my opinion based on my experience and what I’ve seen over the years.
I missed out on an internal role today at my company on 21:18 - Feb 9 with 2235 views | BloomBlue | Might not be a case of faith in you, rather not sure you're ready yet. When I worked I saw too many people put into roles they weren't ready for 'yet' and destroy their careers. Often the result of senior mgrs not being brave enough to say 'not sure they're ready yet and we don't want to throw them into the deep end and destroy their career'. It could be you have senior mgrs who actually have you're long term career plans in the best interest for you and want to be 100% sure you can perform the role and want to give you an opportunity to demonstrate without destroying.

Yeah, very easy to see it only from my point of view and they’ve given me a development plan. It’s not the end of world, disappointed but no totally unexpected.

I won’t muck them about, I see no value in doing that for my future career.

Not quite as black and white as that. The person who would be coming in it was already on the radar to help me out anyway. Just I would be getting more involved with interviewing and managing said person.
I missed out on an internal role today at my company on 12:57 - Feb 10 with 1371 views | vilanovablue | I was passed over for promotion for someone with less experience than me, 18 months on and I am so glad it happened as the role turned into a nightmare which I would hate. So whilst angry at the time it has actually worked out for the best.

Same.in my case I think it was a case of the other person being way more outspoken than me so they thought I would just accept it without a word. The joke is on them as I’ve gone somewhere else on more money and work a day less a week.

Ironically in my case the company wanted a yes man which isn't me. I'd have probably ended up getting myself in hot water for speaking out.

Almost certainly you'll get a role higher up at another company. Also worth noting that they may even offer you the job once you've handed your notice in.

I missed out on an internal role today at my company on 14:15 - Feb 10 with 1180 views | Steve_M | I would definitely take it at face value for six months, ask for specific feedback during that time on people management and anything else they think you need to do a bit more of. If, after six months, nothing materialises then think again but, on the surface, it sounds encouraging and I wouldn't be too down hearted if senior management want to be sure you are ready for the role, not appointing someone to it is quite telling. IMO.

Totally agree with this approach and I'd add that you should ask for formal reviews after 2 and 4 months. This will help with your development, and will show you how vested in you they are. If they take that idea seriously (and they should), and you show them you have progressed, you will have a great chance of changing minds and getting the role. Plus it will make you really focus on improving (always a good thing) And if they don't take it seriously then you have clear information that this is unlikely to be the company for you and can start (quietly) looking elsewhere without needing to rush into the wrong move. Good luck!

I get "exceeding average" scores on my APR every year, but still doing same old role. I have spoken up and said I want to be considered for promotion. If doesnt happen this year, I am outta here.

i'm not angry about it, i have to say. It is what it is, i didn't do enough to convince them i'm ready so that's on me. I haven't been selfish enough in my role, I've been doing 2 peoples job for the last 2 years, so I've had no time for the bigger picture things delivering pieces of work that would have helped me.
