Advice needed: I put a little bit of petrol in my diesel car… 20:16 - Feb 28 with 2581 viewsBlueastheycome

Easily done but stupid I know.

So I accidentally put £4s worth of petrol in my car.

Once I realised, I vaguely recalled that you might be able to get away with a little bit of the wrong fuel.. and with somewhere I really had to be, I opted on the spot to risk it and top up the rest of the tank with the correct fuel and went on my merry way.

I have travelled about 150 miles since with no issue.. except arguably a faint whiff of fuel inside the car perhaps.

So basically the question is- have I f*****d it for choosing to drive away by not seeking assistance to drain the tank and there will be inevitable breaking down of the car tomorrow or the day after?

Or has the fact that I haven’t had any issues today mean I have gotten away with it, and all will be fine?

I put the best part of £10 quids worth of Petrol in my Diesel X1. I then filled it right up with about £80 of Diesel and never had a problem:I think having done 150 miles without trouble you’re in the clear. In the unlikely event that it does pack up, check your insurance as you might have miss fuel coverage. Good luck.

I don't think you get issued with anything when this happens.

The problem might not be obvious right away ie car cutting out, but it will cause damage. How much is guesswork.

The worse case is "you may need to replace parts such as the fuel pumps, filters, injectors, or the fuel tank. If the damage is severe you may even need a new engine."

Hopefully, and likely, not.

A small amount of petrol in a diesel is no problem - especially if you have topped it up with diesel to dilute it down as much as possible.

That’s my understanding too. Azure should be ok.

Gotten is a good 17th & 18th Century English word exported to America with the settlers and still in use there.

Yeah, he’ll be fine with that.

A diesel pump wouldn’t fit in a petrol I don’t think, for that reason.

I seem to remember being told that it used to be common to put a little petrol in a diesel tank to stop it going solid in freezing conditions, so I reckon you'll be OK.

I am by no means an expert, but wouldn’t the petrol float on top of the diesel?

If so I’d be careful about running the tank too empty.

I think my advice would be to keep topping up with diesel to keep blending out the petrol. At the moment you’ve got a percentage of the wrong product running your engine and every time you put more diesel in you’re decreasing that percentage. Frankly it happens and sometimes without your knowledge of the tanker driver sticks the wrong grade into the tank at the petrol station. You’ll likely be fine.

I've done it before. As long as you put a good ratio of diesel in to well dilute the petrol, will be fine.

Late 80’s when up near Stockport, I put a bit of petrol in my Renault Master van, realised, topped it up with diesel during same fill up ( had to go in and explain to cashie!) and then coughed and spluttered along, topping up , £5’s worth at a time until it filtered through. My boss never knew, van was fine!
