I think he is only going to get better and better. The striking difference between him and Ladapo is his football brain imo. He seems a really intelligent player who will thrive under the expert coaching of McKenna. I love that KM identifies the raw attributes he requires and knows he will make them better players. See also Burgess. I've said it before but what a revelation he has been! KM has bought out those early midfielder attributes to make him an almost ideal defender for his system. COYB.

Agree that Burgess is playing very well right now. I do, however, fear his weaknesses, especially being turned by pace, could be exposed were we to go up. You're right though, he doesn’t look like the clogger he initially appeared to be.

I agree. Without him hitting stupidly high levels, I’ve nonetheless been pretty impressed. And you’re right that he’s getting better with each game.

I find it a little bit odd that we’ve gone in for a 1/2 season loan for someone who’s a long term project. But maybe that’s not an issue and I’m sure KM would rather work with a developing player with a high ceiling. We’ll have to see how it plays out. In Jan & Feb, when we were missing chances for fun, we needed someone who could come in firing straightaway. But now things are clicking, maybe he’ll end up being the difference at the sharp end of the season. We’ll have wait and see.

Agreed, he looks very tidy and any player needs to be in a system that suits them as well. With Hirst and Ladapo as options up top now it's a great situation to either keep the opposition guessing about what they're going to have to deal with, or simply to adapt to what will work best for each game. Got to love the way McKenna has constructed a squad that gives these possibilities, and of course the way Ashton has supported him in doing it.

He’s a natural footballer, I love watching him off the ball, his movement is so good. I think he’ll benefit from a run of games which he’s barely had all season. 2 games, 2 goals. Good ones as well.

I think KM has him as his first choice number 9. It’s testament to how good Ladapo has been that he hasn’t been. The shirt is his to lose and the starting 11 now picks itself.

Both Ladapo and Hirst put in an enormous amount of work when they play. Ladapo must be the most improved player for us during the season. That said, I think that Hirst is a notch above. His movement is brilliant, he is a natural forward, and he looks so much better now that more of his teammates are on the same wavelength. To think that a few were ready to write him off after a few games on the basis that he "adds nothing"! I hope that we are able to keep him after this season, but at the very least, he will help to give us the best shot at getting out of this division this season.

Thought he looked a little off the pace for the first 10 games overall, showed glimpses but looked poor at times.

Goals change confidence levels as a striker, and that first one last week was a real clinical finish, and that was backed up again today, hopefully a good run for him now. His movement is clever and he will get the right supply line in this team.

He is a fantastically tireless worker which is important in any striker for McKenna you would think.

I'm waiting for his persistent closing down of the oppo goalkeeper to lead to a goal. It's definitely coming!

I reckon KM most love his work rate - he’s constantly running down the keeper and opposition defenders when they are on the ball. Sometimes they seem like lost causes but he has forced them into errors.

Ladapo has had a great season, but the difference in workrate was marked when Freddie came on.

He is quicker than FL and does all the work Fred does but because of that it creates more mistakes from the opposition and yes I do believe it will eventually lead to a goal, I have always thought a fit and firing GH was an upgrade... but Freddie is still a very important member of this squad

To be fair I think Freddie has worked very hard season, and has overall had a really good season, with some frustrating moments but largely done well for us, and has carried that number 9 role and responsibility on his own pretty much all season.

I don’t think Hirst has been exceptional, even up until his goal at Bolton last week, his first half display was actually poor, but goals are massive for strikers, and I hope the last two clinical finishes give Hirst that real confidence going in to the final stretch.

I do feel Hirst has stepped it up a notch over the past couple of games. I do feel a bit for Ladapo, though - we've got a striker who has scored 16 goals this season and he's slowly playing second fiddle. How many sides can say that at any level?

Would also like Hurst here on a permanent. However if he keeps improving as he has done he may well be out of our price range!

I totally agree.

Some fans have suggested what is the point of him, some fans have moaned why don't we have a striker who can score half chances, like Smith's header for Sheff W goal.
If you look at his goal yesterday and against Bolton, then those goals were both brilliantly finished as good as any striker in this league could finish. Yesterday's header beautifully flicked in the opposite direction he was running towards, the Bolton goal was a fantastic touch. Both down to his ability to find space. If either had been scored against us some Town fans would be moaning why don't we have stikers who can score that type of goal

He was constantly running and finding space yesterday and on too many occasions for my liking the other Town players had missed the fact he was in space. He deserved a second goal for me and was my MOTM.

Hirst is now 24 & needs to be playing regularly & making his mark somewhere. He signed a new deal with Leicester last year, paying him £16k a week, which runs to 2025 but I can't see him as good enough to get any meaningful game time in the PL. Blackburn had an option to buy him but he didn't make his mark there so he came to Town. I think he's effectively in limbo with this contract as a League 1 club can't match it & is he even good enough to start regularly in the Championship?

We’ll just have to focus on Hirst then.
In all seriousness, I imagine promotion is fairly key to securing him permanently.

But you could say the same (is he even good enough to start regularly in the Championship?) about a few in the team, ie if Morsey, Chaplin were good enough for the Championship why did their clubs let them go? Now personally I think they are good enough, as is Hirst.

As you say Hirst biggest problem is he needs a long run in a team even if not scoring to get fully match fit,he has done that previously and started scoring goals, KM has stuck with and now the goals are coming.

I would be surprised if he did move here, Leicester would have to pay off his contract. Although the way Leicester are going, they're amongst a lot of teams in a Prem relegation battle and could be in the championship anyway next season.

Not sure it'll be that hard to do a deal for Hirst, especially if we're promoted.

From their perspective Hirst twice hasn't cut it in the Championship and is now 24. They're on the hook for a chunk of wages and he isn't going to be in huge demand.

It's cut your losses stage for them.

Nice to see that he has a little bit of a competitive and slightly 'nasty' streak. Was evident a few times yesterday.

Would much rather we pushed the boat out to sign Hirst, than get Bishop in. There’s no comparison in terms of footballing attributes and quality.

Rather odd that Leicester gave Hirst a new 3 year contract last summer on £18k a week, but I suppose that's the usual Premier League excess of stockpiling players just in case they come good.
