Quite normal this time of year to field younger sides and trialists. Decisions on those staying/leaving this summer will have likely been made already.
We do have about six or seven out on loan at the moment, as well.

There is a big cull coming of U21 players, they have already been tod a few weeks ago - plus lots out on loan.
This is basically an U18s team and not a particularly strong one at that
Loaned Out:
Harley Curtis (Braintree) Max Hudson (Concord) Alfie Cutbush (Stowmarket) Zak Bradshaw (Braintree) Matt Healy (Cork) Matt Ward (Derry) Callum Page (Needham) Cameron Stewart (Crusaders) Fraser Alexander (Cheshunt) Edwin Agbaje (Yeovil) (picked up a season ending injury) Tete Yengi (Northampton)
Released:
Ben Morris (Detroit) Tommy Hughes (King's Lynn) Zanda Siziba (Yeovil)
Missing:
Tawanda Chirewa Jesse Nwabueze Antoni Bort Lewis Ridd Albie Armin Gerard Buabo Brooklyn Kabongolo Nico Valentine
Buabo, Valentine and Yengi recently signed contracts so they will stay, the rest??, that's a large number of players, I'm sure there are others I have missed also

Disappointing if Armin hasn't kicked on enough to make it. I remember Joe and others being very excited by him as a prospect.

Most of the loaned out players are out of contract this summer, with the exception of Yengi and Stewart, who have another year on their contract. Town have an optional year on a couple of them, the only one I can see being taken is Agbaje who got some game time under McKenna early in the season. The fact that most of these are on loan outside of the top four divisions suggests they are not close to the level we need.
Chirewa did not sign the deal we offered to him, so will be off.
Andy Rolls (?) said at one of the early fans forums that we needed to recruit a different type of player into the academy. The inference was that we were good at producing technically good players, but KM was also looking for them to possess broader attributes, athleticism, pace etc.

From looking at who we have recruited into 21s, Ayinde aside, we haven't gone for players who look or are particularly athletic - in reality they are less athletic than those being released.
Think it is just a refresh is due because most of those are 2nd year pros and turning 20/21 and just not going to make it here for one reason or another - some are unlucky that they didn't get chances when they may have deserved them and ship sailed, others just weren't ever good enough, others suffered big injuries and have missed too much football

Matt Healy been doing a great job down at Cork. No chance he might get another year and a chance to be loaned out at a higher level?

Interesting, I do not get to see this age group play, so little knowledge of the new recruits. I will see if I can find what Rolls said at the time.
Getting your first pro deal is far easier than the second one. Tough business, as is all elite sport.

From what I gather that isn't the case, but is one where think it would be worthwhile as had a good season in 2nd tier over there and has started well in top tier and got into U21 squad.
Personally seems one worth giving a year to and seeing if can fix him something in L1 or L2 from January next year after another full year at Cork

Found the link
From 40th minute - talks about identifying more athletic and robust players for the academy.

Was talking to someone who has worked with him recently and they were saying he's just not going to be quite good enough for us. From what I was previously told, Kieran quite liked him, felt he fitted our style but like you I'm told he's one that's going.

Indeed, announcement soon, I was told the other day. Most of them are going, club not keen to "warehouse" players.
Trialist Joe Edwards, who scored our second goal, is a 19-year-old midfielder from Oldham, incidentally.
One thing I struggle with is that we may get caught between 2 stools - when you look at our first teamers, barely any of them played the level of football that would have seen them make an impact for us in this squad at a young age.
e.g. Sam Morsy doing the same at Chesterfield at this age as Idriz El Mizouni is doing at Orient.
But when you look at probably the best run club - Brighton - and their 'buy to loan' model then this is an avenue I'd like to see us go down

I see what you mean, but from what Mark Ashton was saying the other day, they've obviously identified those they see as having a future, the likes of Idris, Elkan and Corrie, but don't want to keep hold of players for fear of them pushing on and embarrassing us in a couple of years' time if they move elsewhere, which I can see, even if I don't necessarily agree on one or two of them, Matt Ward, for example.
It does seem we're looking at signings in the mould of Ryan Carr, Edwards and some of the other trialists today would appear similar.

Phil - last para - are you saying the players we are trialing are very similar to the ones we are letting go?

I think if you can keep boys progressing with their loan spells then you should try and keep them on - even if it is just as a potential asset later down the line - all of Baggott, Ndaba, El Miz have progressed in their loan spells this year upwards - but so have Healy and likely one or two of the others

Do you know much about the background of this chap Callum Tongue we have recruited as U18s coach from Man City? The initial thought is obviously that it is a coup when you read 'Man City'. You wouldn't think he'd want to leave the set up there but I presume this is effectively a promotion for him?
The talk I was hearing 18 months or so ago was that we wanted to raid top academies for players that were going to fall below the mark of getting close to first teams - ironically Ben Knight types. But that hasn't happened so far.

It would seem odd to not keep those that are progressing, even if it is only to 'sell-on' at a later date, albeit not for big numbers. Or that they progress to push for a first team slot?
Also, what message does it send to those already in the youth pipeline or those thinking of joining our setup.
On the face of it, seems rather disjointed to the rest of the approach within the Club at the moment.
