Off there in the middle of May with work. Anyone got any recommendations for places I can go to get away from my students when required?

I won't be driving, walking only.

I haven't been for nearly 20 years (where does the time go?) but it was a decent place to walk around. For North American city it felt decent without being crowded, or particularly edgy.

I think the suburb/area was called Gas Town and it had decent microbrewery pubs in it and places to eat. Chinatown was very cool too from memory, seem to think it was or is one of the largest ex-pat communities in the world.

Stanley Park. The Botanical Gardens. Japanese Gardens. The Gas Street area. Depending on where you are staying, you may need to take a bus.

Although, it's hard to say if we don't know where your students will be.

I've no idea where they will be, to be fair, it's not really them I'll be trying to avoid.

It'll be my co-worker, a generally annoying person who would high five the opening of an envelope, and will constantly say, "I'll come" whenever I want to wander off on my own.

Capilano suspension bridge on north shore is good, get a cable car up grouse mountain & check the totem poles, carvings, lumberjack show.
Gas town is cool, China town, there are some areas to be careful of but ask locally, Stanley park has a half decent aquarium & other attractions. See if you get chance to do some whale watching, Vancouver island is really nice for a visit if you get transportation. Enjoy.

In that case, get up early one morning, take the ferry to Vancouver Island, and hide up in Tofino for the duration of the trip. There's a nice restaurant there that serves the most fantastic salmon, cooked and served on a piece of cedar wood.

I live in Vancouver. My recommendation, depends on how long you have and what you like doing.

If you like hiking and can do a day trip, then Whistler and then chilling at Scandinavia Spa is nice. Though you'd only be able to do a lower route if you are returning in a day. They train crash would be my pick of the lower routes.

If you like walking and want to stay more local, then Stanley Park is nice. You can also rent a bike or electric bike if you prefer.

If you want to sample some local breweries then I'd recommend Port Moody. It is further out, but easier to go from bar to bar than Granville Island. Granville Island is good, but it is overpriced (comparatively, as it is a tourist trap). However, you could do something like whale watching from here, combining the two. You should be able to snap Orcas (not whales) commonly, and sometimes real whales. If you don't want to travel to either, but still want some nice beers, then steamworks is easily accessible and is the pick of the bunch anyway.

Capilano suspension bridge is a good shout, if you're not afraid of heights. It does wobble/sway a bit, so you have been warned!

Vancouver is a great place to live, if you enjoy the outdoors, but it isn't the best tourist city.

DM me if you want more specific info or if you want me to arrange/inquiry about something. With that said, most things are easy to arrange from afar.

You’re a bit stymied if walking as it’s huge. If you’re students are at the university you’re a tad out of the city too. Others have suggested the usual tourist haunts - watching cricket in Stanley Park is surreal. Gas Town with its steam clock has some nice shops. Vancouver now has a massive drugs problem - so be prepared for a surprising number of ‘down and outs’. If you can take the ferry across to Vancouver Island - you get to see some beautiful islands and can see a bit of unspoilt BC next to the city - and Victoria is nice.

Best thing I did in the city, about 10 years ago, was hire a bike and cycle around Stanley Park — some stunning views and very easy to do if you aren't around for that long.
