Why not just say if you go on WOTB you will have the phone taken away and it will be thrown into the nearest river?

Can't help on the apps side of things but strongly recommend a strict rule on not taking it to bed at night. If not already on your mind.

(For the benefit of Ullaa... WOTB stands for Wrath of the Barclay - it's a Norwich forum, so I'm not sure of the relevance to you, but at least you'll understand this comment now.)

Is it android or iphone?

Depends really how much monitoring you want to do. On Android checkout the Google Family link app... allows you to set screen time limits, track location, verify application downloads... https://families.google/familylink/

I think Apple have something similar, but I'm not clear on the details.

If its not too late, forget apps. Get rid of the phone, the WiFi, the ps5 etc all together and go live off grid in a forest. I wish I had. What a window of shat influencers and black mirror stroking we give our children.

I completely agree actually, but it seems to have become some kind of test of trust / growing up. Plus he's about to be allowed to go to school on his own very soon, so we just felt we needed a location monitor

We use Family Link. We have android phones. It not only monitors their phone use, it also cover chromebooks too. You monitor all their activity. You can also set it to lock the device at a certain time or after a certain amount of use.
Recommended.

Agreed, to not let your kid have one could limit them in our modern world. There's definitely positives, I do enjoy our "family chat" and sending my kids music and funny stuff. Just does also cause a lot of issues that seem quite different to growing up 80s/90s pre smart phones.

Or you could just use the word “no” with your children.

Yeah absolutely and things really were simpler back then.

I feel our hands are tied a little now, so it's a very reluctant yes and it's going to have maximum strings attached!

Recently I took the 14 year olds phone. He then found an old phone body, somehow got a sim and credit and was using it, going about with it hidden in his pants!

You have to give him credit for the workaround there if nothing else I spose!

Doesn't answer your monitoring question directly, but you could uninstall the default internet browser and install 'SPIN Safe Browser' which automatically blocks access to most things potentially dodgy.

Good opportunity to help define that parent/young adult relationship and introduce a dialogue.

Have an honest discussion about what your worries are and draw up a list of rules you're both happy with. For example, they can't install new apps without you so you can go through the settings together to make sure they're safe. Discuss the dangers of not using ghost mode etc.

Without it enabled, someone can literally track the phone to the house you're in.

Which was kinda my point. You're monitoring them but unless you both understand what you're monitoring against theres still a danger.

Best to up front from the get-go and don't be afraid to be schooled - they will know more than you.
