The Ashes starts Friday - Predictions?! 05:36 - Jun 15 with 1938 viewsChrisd

For me - I hope I’m wrong - I really do believe that ‘Bazball’ will get shown up in this series for its limitations. I can see Boland, causing our batters problems with his nagging line and length too. The inclusion of Moeen, I’m still finding baffling, not sure the message that sends out to others?! I can see the Aussie batsmen really going after him and I’m not convinced he’ll last the series. Head says Aussies to win 3-1, but my heart is hoping for an England win, but I’m not really that convinced. Really hope I’m eating humble pie in 7 weeks time.

I'm surprised "Head says Aussie 3-1 win". Their players normally say 5-0. :-)

If Ali opens, England win. Crawley doesn't deserve his place, but will probably keep it. That means three seamers and a spinner, if Stokes can't bowl. Or four seamers and Root part timing it. Lunacy!

So we lose or draw the First Test.

Then Ali moves up to open, and we win three of the remaining four.

Duckett to be player of the series. They are going to hate him. The only England player to stand up to Jimmy Anderson since Kevin Pietersen.

It genuinely is the only solution to the "Stokes is too injured to bowl" conundrum.

Much the same here. I’m a bit annoyed about Foakes getting dropped while Crawley is forever in there. Stokes is on one leg, Moeen has a terrible average against the Aussies, who knows how fit JB is. It feels like the tightest home Ashes for a long time.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Crawley's last chance ... but we've said that a few too many times before.

England has a strong batting line-up and possibly the strongest for years.

This depends upon both Duckett and Brook living up to early promise though. Brook could be a revelation. At least Ali adds to this.

I would have omitted Crawley for Woakes and instructed the groundsmen to prepare a wicket tailor-made for him Andy and Broad. A lot of grass is grown in Brum, let's hope a significant amount of it is on the Edgbaston strip.

I wish that the Indians had kept those Aussie bowlers in the field for longer. As it is it turned out to be the perfect preparation for both batsmen and bowlers. England v Ireland was virtually a practise game and provided no test and little of value.

Our captain's win at all cost, never say die attitude is our strongest weapon.

I think the Aussies will win quite easily I’m afraid. They have more better players in my view.

But in sport, you never know and the England team have done brilliantly in recent series..

If England's bowling looked at full strength (whatever that is these days) then I think it would be fairly close but with the loss of Leach, Robinson and Anderson having had injuries recently and Stokes not looking 100% fit it might end up a bit like the WTC match last week with the Aussie top order getting a lot of runs.

Moeen makes sense at short notice I think, whoever our spinner is will get targeted and better that's someone with some experience (my memories of watching Simon Kerrigan at the Oval in 2013 definitely inform this view!).

Australia to retain the Ashes but could see a drawn series as possible.

Can't see a drawn match this series, unless one is heavily rain affected.

I make Australia favourites. They've had the better preparation (how often do we say that?) and will be sharper. We seem to be a quickly taken run or bad landing away from a series ending injury with a few of our guys and a 5 test series in such a short space of time is going to be hard work for the key players in our side, who are either getting on a bit or have injury problems.

As usual, 20 wickets is the key but I can see a few frustrating days in the field with some huge second wicket partnerships.

First Test sets the tone for the rest of the series, it was all downhill from Burns' golden duck down there. Let's bat first and have 140 odd for 0 at lunch.

Logic says we will lose, but with all the injuries, I think the team will see entertaining cricket as a success to bring more eyes on the game. It was quite disappointing to see our bowling in the second innings against Ireland, so I'm not feeling particularly confident. This style of cricket does seem to pull results out of nowhere though, plus I'm eternally optimistic so I will go with a 3-1 England win.

The advantage of "Bazball" is that England will keep pushing for wins. Caution and containment are just as likely to be punished by the Aussies as rashness. Aggression at least stands a chance of keeping us in touch, so there is always the possibility we can burst through, with an inspired Broad spell, for example.

As for Moeen, the message is simple - the others are too raw or not good enough (or have opted out of Test cricket). The Aussie batsmen will go after any spinner we field. At least Ali's experience will help him hold his nerve. Plus he used to be a decent batter.

Listened to Moeen earlier on the TMS preview podcast. He's such a great lad.

I think the biggest advantage to picking him over one of the kids is that there's no pressure on him, and he's not going to be expected to keep the run rate down/hold up an end. He has freedom and that's such a huge part of Bazball.

Shamelessly, if anyone has a ticket for Lords or the Oval that they can't use, I'll take it.

While that could all happen, it would require an hours rain, or 6 wickets to fall, for England to score less than 50 before lunch.

Have faith my son.

Crawley will hammer at least fifty in the first hour.

Duckett will bat the innings out and centuries for Root and Baisrstowe,

Stokes goes for an exciting duck thus saving his delicate body for a long bowling stint.

Heads up for overseas people or those without SKY. Channel 9 in Australia are showing the Ashes free to air. I just signed up for an account using a VPN and saw a bit of late night tv so seems to work fine.
