With this current configuration matching the squad limit, and with a long and gruelling season ahead, will McKenna only move players out to accommodate incoming signings (2 x strikers, 1 centre back)…. Or does he want to get the likes of El Miz, Baggot, and Humphreys out on loan, and does he see Camara and maybe Ball/Camara as surplus?!

We shall see.

Great work again from Joe.

Still a lot of work to do recruitment wise. Next few weeks will be exciting. Whilst depth wise we are fine numbers wise, it's just that strength in depth behind that starting 11 that concern me in a play off push but early days yet.

Agree we have numbers but need an upgrade on pedigree to be competitive top end of the championship,

Harness and El Miz look the most obvious departures from that list? And that's just to get us our 2 extra strikers we need.

Jackson an outside possibility too depending on who the upgrade was given his versatility

Is a playoff push realistic?

What would happen if a club only named 2 keepers in the 25 and they both got injured?

Would they be allowed an emergency signing outside of the transfer windows, or do they have to name 3?

I don't think the way were looking to recruit is simply to stay up and consolidate.

There was an interesting look at the use of fake No 2 goalkeepers and how the emergency loan rules can be gamed here:

I'm not sure, but the emergency keeper rules are so lax, and so heavily abused by L1 and L2 clubs I'm sure you'd get away with it

This basically assumes yes, and is an interesting article so may be something we look at

I think it's realistic with a few additions and a continuation of the progress and togetherness that the last two years have brought.

In addition, it's also not a requirement this season, which might in itself make it more realistic, although I think one of McKenna's great strengths is to remove that sort of psychological pressure anyway.

McKenna isn't here to tread water. We will be having a right go this season and will be aggressive in our recruitment as a result.

I think we need:

1 x CB
1 x AM (right)
2 x Strikers

With Harness, El Miz, Jackson and Camara or Ball making way for these.

I would assume most clubs would be hoping their u21 keeper would fill the 3rd spot.

Looking at our squad as a whole, it shows we're at a bit of a disadvantage this year if we don't have the talent coming through from the u21s. Or is that a tad harsh if Humphreys and Baggott are going to play a part?

Is there anyone likely to break through? Hopefully we can develop the likes of Oudnie-Morgan and Valentine and they can get some cup experience - they look decent for their age.

I think Harness would be unlucky to move on this summer but it depends if they recruit in that area - for example, we sign Twine then his playing time would be seriously in question.

Harness can cover the central and left forward role, but he'll probably be one of those who's in and out of the matchday squad with limited starts. Keeping Aluko on board might've been the low risk safety net this season for moving Harness on potentially.

It has to be. If you break down the transfer fees we've already paid to assemble the current squad, it'll be more than most other clubs in the league did for theirs.

By the end of the window, that'll certainly have increased. Potentially 2x strikers, an AM and a CB will be high priority on the list.

Play offs would have to be realistic then.

Sure, not trying to be awkward but I honestly wondered what the club's thinking was.

Clearly PL is the aim, but it felt like this season we might get a few bloody noses along the way.

It also depends of course how much those with the parachute payments are in the sh!t. There are some very rich clubs (in theory) with squads far above ours knocking around.

We are a bit off a play off push as things stand.

Would need quality additions, 2 strikers, Right winger , centre back. Then we can talk about playoff push.

In terms of the starting 11, we are definitely missing a centre back and striker with real Championship quality.

I think Burns will be okay in the Championship. If you forget Burns himself and solely focus on the role of the right forward in our system, then there's a lot of positional work and physical attributes demanded to make the system click rather than actual on ball quality - compared to what Broadhead and Chaplin have to offer on the ball in their roles.

Burns can sometimes be the out ball for Walton to go long and win the flick on. He is also the player to stretch a defence in behind too with his pace - we've seen Chaplin release him into the space a lot. Depending on the opposition formation, his starting position off the ball might be higher for a high press or he helps tuck in and form a back 5 without the ball.

It's a specialist role and not many come to mind when you go about upgrading. One name which springs to mind is Oliver Burke - but I don't think he's any different to Burns.

Big season for Burns though, he's mainly been a L1 player in his career so he'll be hoping to progress along with the club's progression in the Championship.

Excellent post 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

The other consideration is without the ball generally. You’re going from a league where you had 59.1% possession (Wyscout data), and also a lot of control, especially in opposition third, to a new league where you might start seeing less than 50% more often.

You didn’t have many games, just 6, last season where you had less than 50% possession. Possession isn’t everyone as you’ll know, but the ability to take up high positions because you know you can advance the ball through the thirds in lg1 becomes a different reality. Starting positions become different. You may might you still have possession but it’s closer to your own goal than the season just gone. That can be quite a difference, and also just a shift from circa 60:40 to 50:50 is 9 mins less without the ball and 9 more minutes trying to get it back.

I’m looking forward to seeing KM’s approach. He’s very bright and a huge asset for you.

I think that is a really good post and I agree with all of that. Burns 100% deserves his chance, his output the last two seasons has been absolutely frightening and I still think his performance last season has been somewhat underrated.

I'm also a big fan of Jes Rak Sakyi who I would love us to pick up on loan, although that is looking unlikely especially with the injury to Michael Olise. Think he is very different to Burns.

Our approach to games won't change much, but like you say, our share of possession will change. In some games it will suit us, in others it'll be frustrating. That's football at the end of the day, but the one thing that will be more noticeable is teams will punish mistakes and giving the ball away cheaply a lot more than what we've seen in L1.

He came in to do a job and he's done his job - I think some criticism last season was unfair when he's been really consistent in his Ipswich career.

The Olise injury and Zaha leaving could mean that loan happens really late on in the window if at all it does happen. Very different player to Burns though. I think if JRS came in, he'd be competition and depth with Broadhead rather than for Burns.

I think the approach will be very similar, but it takes an upgrade in talent to play that at a higher level so think we prob need another 3-4 nailed on starters of greater quality than (guessing) Burgess, Burns, Ladapo at a minimum
