It's interesting reading McKenna's comments on Baggott - and I expected him to go out on loan (and even say so on last night's Blue Monday podcast....)
But when you look at the situation at the back, and McKenna's comments on him after game at weekend:
“I think he’s improved over the course of the pre-season, to be honest. I think in general, the players do improve when they spend time in this group with how the boys train, with the players around them and the way that the coaching staff are working with them. He’s improved even in the five weeks or whatever to this point."
I think it will be worth keeping him.
I was a big George Edmundson fan, thought he was one of the better signings of the mad 2021 summer and had been excellent under Cook, and then McKenna
But it's now 15 months really when he has been either injured, coming back from injury, rusty and when he has played has looked a bit of a liability each time.
Say we sign McNally - are we comfortable going into a season with McNally, Woolfie, Burgess and Edmundson? Or would that comfort blanket of Baggott be a big help if Edmundson can't recover fitness properly, can't get out of this funk re form, and also give us a 2nd left footer for balance in there?
I think he should stick around, and think he'll get some game time, plus a full year working with McKenna and the coaching staff - worst case scenario for EB is Edmundson gets back to previous performance levels, and he goes out on loan in January instead of now

It does make you wonder if one of them is to go out on loan it will be Edmundson.
Also makes sense squad numbers wise with the 2-3 in comment from Ashton. Keep Baggott and use him for the cup games, especially if we have Ball as extra cover. |  | | |

I don't think Edmundson will do so - back in the day when you could send players out for a month or so then you would have liked to have done so but just can't work like that with a player like him any more
If we were short at back, I'd rather see Baggott play there over Dom Ball, his versatility is laudable but it has to be last resort | |

I agree. When you have an elite manager and high level coaches, it makes total sense. I'm not sure he really gained much at all from his two loans season. Nowhere near as much as Humphreys did from being in and around the squad here.

I think it's a really difficult decision to make, but I would be more inclined to keep him as part of the squad. If he does go out on loan it needs to be with a club that actually plays progressive football.
This is purely going off what I have seen through a laptop screen over the summer, but Burgess doesn't really look like he's enjoying himself at the moment. He was vital in the run in, but I still have doubts as to whether he is Championship quality. | |

I'm a bit split on this. One one hand I think a CB dipping in for a few games (cups + when injuries/suspensions strike) doesn't do much for them (unlike, say, a CM like Humphreys) and they're better off getting 40 or so games somewhere to build up a bank of experience.
On the other, the club were clearly disappointed that he barely played for Cheltenham and are obviously happy with how he's developed over the summer, and as you say maybe it's better to carry on here for half a season then in January there'll be a club that can take him and give him 20 games.
Tall left footed CBs who are good on the ball are one of the most desired player profiles in the game. Not suggesting he'll go on to be a top level player but he's got talent and attributes worth persevering with and one I hope doesn't ultimately get cast off in the desire to keep investing and buying players in.
Whatever the club decide hopefully he gets the best opportunity to kick on. |  |

Sadly, the thing that first springs to my mind when Edmunson's inclusion in the team is mentioned these days is "uncertainty" - re injury, fitness, performance.
Any player can get injured at any time of course, but he seems less reliable than most, and with limited permitted numbers it's not really what KM or we want is it ... |  |

I think he'll be a better player in 12 months time by staying with us, being part of the group and learning from the coaches and development opportunities he'll be afforded than by going to Stevenage and playing 30+ games. | | | |

I thought he was fantastic against Leipzig, really really good performance by him.
Would be comfortable him being with the group this year - although another addition is required - still like the Cathcart deal.
Regarding Edmundson, he will find his form, has been a long time out and just needs a bit of time to build back up to it - but we have seen there is a very good defender there. |  | | |

I think he looked incredibly naive against Luton, there were a couple of times where he got pulled in to their half with no chance of winning the ball and they easily then got in down that side. However, i thought he was very good on Friday and stood out as being solid. So all in all im not really sure, i dont think im convinced he could fill the void if we had some injuries for 5/6 games but may do ok in isolation. A bit like Humphreys tbh. | | | |

Could also be a bit of transfer mind games going on. So we don't look desperate and get held to ransom on a potential CB incoming. There was talk of Trusty going to Sheff Utd. Don't know how many CB irons we had in the fire, but that would be one less..
Still think there's a lot that Baggot could benefit from , by remaing here. At least untill January. When it would be easier to define a decent loan move depending on how various L1 clubs are doing...
For instance, last season, at this time, you'd have thought than an Oxford or MKD would be a decent L1 loan to a team punching mid upper league position. But they both ended up in a relegation dog fight..So there could be a lot of sense in delaying a loan move. |  | | |

I have a feeling he may well be given until the end of August. One, if not two carabao cup games to play in before the window closes and if McKenna is seeing improvement in him, then I reckon he could get a chance.
A late loan move couldn't be ruled out if that's then the best route with a recall option in January, albeit, he wouldn't be able to move elsewhere to play football.

All in all, seems a bit of a 'free hit' for him to stay here if he won't count as one of the 25, so nothing to lose? by keeping & improving him under our class coaches, with some games as and when. | |
