Just looking back, BFJ had us playing in our absolute swashbuckling best that year, despite being pipped by Wiggun.
Had things gone slightly differently, I was wondering how that side would've done in the premier league.
Davis would've been fine in goal
Fab, JDV, Bam Bam, Diallo and RIchards - not so much, we'd have been torn apart.
Miller, Jim, Horlock, Currie, Westy - there's some creativity there and they'd have had more time in the prem than there is now.
Bent, Kuqi, Pablo - They'd have got goals.
I'd have loved to have seen this lot have a crack in the prem, but it wouldn't have gone well, would it?? |  | | |  |

One of many things you can point to.
Kuqi's injury in February slowed our momentum a lot.
Currie's miss against Leeds felt like a big moment at the time.

We fell away quite a lot in 2005, us and Wigan falling over themselves to throw promotion away but we managed to drop more points.
That was also the most consciously direct Town side since the 70s, it could play a bit but we were so dependent on hitting Bent and Kuqi early that when the latter was injured we dropped off even more.
I think we would have struggled had we gone up, the midfield was quite slow for the Championship but, had we done so, then the period from 2005 to 2013 might have been a whole lot more enjoyable. |  |

the two home games against QPR and Watford who were sht and we lost both
being 2-0 up away to Watford to draw 2-2
0-0 away to Gillingham

Seem to remember we lost at home to Watford 1-2 then QPR 0-2 then away at Wigan 1-0 which made it difficult but still I seem to remember Wigan dropping a lot of points and we just couldn’t turn our draws into wins to make the ground back up. That team deserved to go up in my opinion and things could have been so much different. |  | | |

I'm sure it was New Years Day at home V Leicester, Town sitting pretty at the top, when Dion Dublin got his studs in Shefki's thigh, putting him out for some time. That's what did it.
It also didn't help that Unsworth wasn't available for the playoff games because his loan was over, but I might be misremembering that detail?

I remember that QPR game. It was absolutely bloody freezing, we were 1-0 down after a defensive howler after 4 mins. Terrible performance, then I went up to Wigan following Saturday and had we won either of those instead of lost, would have been promoted automatically. |  | | |

The 1-1 at Reading, yes. Was in the Reading end with a home supporting friend, sitting on my hands when we went 1-0 up in the 90th minute or so. Then they equalise and I remember thinking I hope that doesn’t come back to bite us.

We wanted to sign David Unsworth but didn't have the cash, our backline had been weakened by the sale of Gaardsoe, which I still view as insanity, and we lost Venus/McGreal in back to back seasons. Diallo worked hard but was not good enough, Richards could have improved, Naylor, Devos and Wilnis would have probably done okay. We also signed Mark Fish.... it's worth noting we had Scowcroft in the side on loan, but he wasn't played as a forward.
In an alternate universe we got Taricco on a free from Spurs, he doesn't get injured and we go up as Champions with Treacle the hero. |  | | |

From what I can remember we were still in it and then for no apparent reason BFJ changed the shape of the team for Wolves away and we got walloped and that was basically the start of the end. Could be making that up but I distinctly remember thinking "what's he done that for" before the game. | | | |

Remember saying, at a pre-season friendly against Southend, we are going to score for fun but let too many in.
The turning point, for me, was the appeal by Man City after he won his case. The appeal cane around the time we played Wigan. Win that game and we were favourited for automatic promotion. |  |

It is frustrating looking back that we let McGreal go to Burnley, who was superb for them, and had talent like Reuser and Pablo who he under utilized and let go.
Joe did great in getting blood from a stone with some of our players such as Naylor, Richards, Westlake, all looked incredible for us under Joe, but would bin off players like Reuser, Pablo, even Armstrong and bring in Santos, Dinning, Diallo, Proudlock, Fish, Parkin and so on. Basically it was the dross he signed that let him down, DeVos, Kuqi, Horlock (although he was slowing up big time) and Currie were decent signings, had we not binned off a few of the better players and brought in some of these we would have been promoted. | | | |
