Is a near 23 year old a 'youngster' ? on 23:44 - Aug 29 with 2083 views | BigCommon | A 22 year old is considered a youngster, imo. Certainly not a seasoned pro'. Still learning his trade. It's real football. Not FM. Edit, just to add, Butcher and Brazil were exceptional talents who went on to represent their countries many times. Including World Cup tournaments. Bit harsh to compare the lad to those two. [Post edited 30 Aug 2023 2:45]

I know I probably should’ve realised this already, but your post has made me wonder if it’s never going to happen for me.

Even at the professional level I think there was a different culture back then, if you were good enough you were in the team, regardless of age. I was knocked about a bit when I started but adapted as I played more. Young players are better looked after now, simply due to the sheer amount of money in the game.

At which stage does 'journeyman' tend to also be added in after a few clubs?

Also, need to include 'veteran' in there too, along with senior pro?

Veteran, imo, is a player in his mid to late 30s, say, 36-37, with 500 plus pro games behind him... It's shifted a bit in recent years for me. With advances in sports science, training methods, larger squads/benches meaning minutes can be managed, to a degree.. I wouldn't call a 30year old a veteran. These days a 30 year old is probably still at their peak.

When I read the article the Wonderkid was 24. Maybe I’m just too i to Football Manager but for me the age limit for a Wonderkid is 21

Is a near 23 year old a 'youngster' ? on 07:55 - Aug 31 with 1316 views | Swansea_Blue | These youngsters do seem to be getting older. I think it's more about experience than a true reflection of age. He's not had than many opportunities since he accrued most of his PL experience 4 years ago. These big teams just sit on players who didn't break through at 18, hoping they may come good a bit later on. I'm not convinced it helps the players' development. I mean, how can playing for Norwich on loan be good for anyone?!

It’s a function of Phil’s age. If Finidi were to be rumoured to be joining the coaching team now, he would be described as prospective player coach for one of the youth teams.

Think that's probably fair, he's come in as a developing player rather than someone who is a senior player, which was what I was thinking when I said youngster. Players do generally seem to become established when they're older, Hirst and Broadhead being other examples.

Is a near 23 year old a 'youngster' ? on 09:40 - Aug 31 with 1134 views | monty_radio | I think that the gradual evolution of the entire transfer system explains quite a bit. In particular, the vast trade right through all the leagues on loan players. Developing your own players is both expensive and risky; importing someone else's on a hand-to-mouth basis enables you to field an experienced team right from the off, without waiting to see if this might just be, say, El mizouni's, Humphries, Baggott's breakthrough year. The effects are most obvious in L2 and the National League where teams that run academies start a new season with upwards of half a team unknown to the fans, but with their latest prospects no nearer the pitch than the bench.
