I get it with Maguire. Not so much for the Australia friendly but certainly the Italy qualifier. It's the last hurdle, win it and we're all but there. Maguire obviously isn't playing much for United but the bloke has 50+ England caps in some of the biggest games we've ever been in, vast experience and I can't recall too many times where he's let us down. I wouldn't just have him in the squad, I would still have him in the starting XI alongside Stones.
Henderson won't start but again he has experience on his side and is probably valuable in the squad in the short term for that reason. His days have to be numbered though after his career choice to go to Saudi, I can't take him seriously playing out there.
After this set of games (assuming we beat Italy) I would hope Southgate starts thinking ahead to next summer a bit more and perhaps gives the likes of JWP preference over Henderson. |  | | |

The England squad under Southgate seems very difficult to get into, but once you're in hard to get out of - even getting injured, not playing or moving to Saudi keeps you in!
I would have thought Burn had a chance with Shaw and Chilwell injured or maybe Longstaff, Watkins deserves the recall though |  |

When he plays, you are waiting more for a mistake than you are in expectation that he'll do a solid job, this is the problem, take him out of that circumstance, tell him to make better life choices rather than staying where the money is. | |

We're not blessed with proven options there, he's done well for England. If I'm Southgate I would keep calling him up and keep selecting him. The best thing Maguire can do is leave United, go to a mid table side where he's going to play and leave the Old Trafford circus behind him. Should've gone to West Ham in the summer. | | | |

Do you not think? As others have mentioned in here, rightly or wrongly, anything he does (or doesn't do) in the England set up at the minute gets scrutinised - see Scotland own goal and the debacle from the media afterwards (which was wrong) - how can that be a good thing? Just let him have a couple of weeks off, it's not like he's desperately needed for these games.
Agree that he should've left in the summer though, that was a bit stupid of him not to go to West Ham to try and rebuild his career a little. | |

Well unless he retires from football completely it’ll always be an issue. He’s never/rarely let England down. Play him and make him captain would be my managerial decision. |  |
