I can't understand why he doesn't. He knows he is toast so why carry on the charade. I think that everyone apart from tory voters hopes he makes it to July 4th.

Only a Minister could replace apparently, so most eyes were looking at Cameron. Would be poetic that the man who destroyed the country with Brexit would have his final act as the man at the helm as the Tory party plunges to the deepest depths of despair

Would be interesting to see the polls if it happened. I would imagine he would save the tories a few seats. [Post edited 9 Jun 2024 21:47]

The rumour seems to be getting some traction, and it does worry me somewhat. Assuming Charles would even accept Sunak's resignation, the appointment of the PM is within the sole gift of the monarch, and I can quite imagine Charles appointing Cameron as interim PM for the next month, given that he already knows the role and would probably be best placed to carry out the functions of PM in an emergency. It wouldn't necessarily mean that he'd also be the new Tory leader, as PM and Tory Leader are constitutionally separate roles, although I imagine he'd be seen as a safe pair of hands with sufficient campaigning experience to try and steer them through the current troubled waters. True but it's the last thing they need. The party will force Sunak and they can have a reset.

The tories wouldn't be able to elect a new leader in time ahead of the election. In any event, nobody would take the job on in these circumstances, and start their tenure as party leader with an even bigger defeat than they are already looking at. And it looks as though boris is behind the rumours, so clearly lies in the first place.

With Parliament dissolved, Cameron is not so hamstrung by being in the Lords as would normally be the case. Indeed, he is the only senior Minister with an assured position going forwards (can't fail to be re-elected). Still can't see it happenning, tho. It would be constitutionally awkward for the King to simply decide who to appoint, unique situation notwithstanding. Moreover, raising up such a noted moderate (and Brexit opponent) would enrage the right of the Conservatives and potentially drive more hard-line voters towards Reform, while at the same time being unlikely to suck many in from further to the centre or left.

Indeed, the vultures are already circling, assuming there are enough Tory MPs after this election for any candidate to get a quorum of nominations.

Bizarre from Braverman. I thought election post mortems were supposed to wait until after the election. Seems they have given up and are positioning for the fight ahead before even one vote has been cast.

Such a good decision from Cameron to do the Brexit referendum to stave off a party split, eh?

Braverman had already been on the party "rubber chicken" circuit, as members will pick the leader from the final 2 candidates.
