Very much so.

Sunderland central would have been very tight indeed if reform people had voted conservative.

The rise of bigotry and the far right across Europe is a very frightening trend. I like to think we are largely better than that. I appear to be wrong.

Brexit had some genuine non xenophobic issues attached to it. It also came with a veneer of respectability that does not exist for reform. It seems that given anonymous votes, lots of people are prepared to shout loud and proud "we are bigots"!

however if the brexit party voters had voted conservative last time, the tories would have won easily; the swing is from con to reform rather than lab/ld/green to reform.

we'll get a better idea when the votes come in from other(non north east) areas

whilst there were some genuine non xenophobic issues, they were greatly outweighed, especially out loud, by the opposite

It wasn’t bigotry that made us fear 70 million Turks, it was intense dislike of garlic relish instead of chilli sauce. Or something

“Respectability” is pushing it a bit far. Non-racist but equally deluded ideology is closer to the mark. Their only inarguable point was being able to demonstrate sovereignty, but any of us paying attention knew we had that all along and didn’t see the need to prove it by shooting ourselves in the foot. *Sigh*

"veneer"....

I was not attracted to the drive towards federalism. The EU as a whole appears to have backed away from that of late.

Awful news - the fascists are coming.
It is very sad that Farage the self publicising liar is conning so many people

I'm surprised more people here aren't thanking Farage. His involvement has ensured what would have been a bad night for the Conservatives is a instead a disaster.

Why will he be? If he continues to drive the Conservative Party into division and turmoil, it opens the way for governments that are far less extreme right than we have had for the past 14 years. It will be interesting to see whether it can even be used to drive some decent electoral reform.

If you are suggesting the popularisation of division and extreme right ideologies, I think that has happened already.

Well done to the folks in Clacton who think a privately educated millionaire who banks at Coutts will make their lives better. Well done.

But he will really stop the foreigners coming over and stealing everything from them. Just like voting Brexit did ... and his low-tax low-regulation policies will serve them all so well ... until they want any public services or legal rights.

This is the point, up until now Fartrage has been at the sidelines braying.

The best thing to expose him as the lazy grifter he is has happened - now he has to be an MP and he can't hide

It could give him a platform too ... although the media already have so I am not sure how much more of one he could get.

Not really, if we had PR it is likely the government would be made up of Labour, Lib Dems and Greens. That would be a better outcome.

Exactly.

He's had a platform without any accountability. What's changed overnight is the latter.

Looking forward to seeing his attendance records.
