Van Dyk weakest link for Holland and Liverpool 09:30 - Jul 7 with 2903 viewsRIPbobby

Do any of you think that Virgil Van Dyke is the Netherlands and Liverpool weakest link? I will present my arguement in Ipswich and England paragraphs.

Ipswich
In my eyes VVD is a very old fashioned centre half who excels marking a similarly old fashioned centre forward in a very old fashioned 442 system. So if he was marking a Mich D'Avray / Mick Harford type he would excel and win the battle. But put him up against a George Hirst / Ali al Hamadi type of player and he falls down. He is not very mobile, a weak passer and is very easy to pass around. He is not going to like Chaplin, Omari Ali, Davis et el making his life hell and I really do think we will tear Liverpool apart. In our style of play I think Mo Salah will struggle. The one player I would fear is Nunez. I think his movement could hurt us.

England
I think VVD would relish playing against Harry Kane. For his age Kane covers a good amount of ground, but in my opinion he is not a high press kind of player. I would put Ollie Watkins against him in a modern high press system to run him ragged and thus the likes of Saka and Bellingham would pick up the pieces. He would struggle.

Well that's what I think anyway.

The rumours about Kane having some sort of injury must be true. He's not running and he's never been a lazy player. Toney ran more in his time on the pitch than Kane ran all game.

There's definitely an argument for Toney/Watkins combo but there's no way Southgate drops Kane, even if he could say he has been carrying an injury.

Truly impaired.

No he won't. Gareth's biggest problem is he tries to keep everyone happy and you can't do that in management. You need to be ruthless. I wonder if England would still win the world cup if Sir Alf had played Jimmy Greaves more? Hmmm.

Need to play Toney instead of Kane. More aggressive than Kane and will upset their defence.

Kane is being limited by Southgate requiring him to play in a forward, narrow position, which removes 3 of his key strengths: expansive, positive passes as he drops into MF; drifting out wide so he can make a forceful run into a scoring position; dropping into MF to be the front of a pressing line.

This is less obvious than Hodgson expecting him to score from his own corners, but just as limiting.

His assists record for his clubs is outstanding. Where Southgate has him playing, it can only ever be minimal.

Doesn’t help that he appears to have lost a significant chunk of pace and fitness as well.

Kmac would have dropped Kane after the Denmark game. And would have been 100% backed by him.

The Dutch midfield is so poor particularly defensively. Turkey walked through them plenty of times. Foden and Bellingham will be looking forward to it.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

VVD isn't particularly immobile is he, that's generally why he is so highly rated?

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Somewhere in this thread Kane was said not to be mobile in this tournament... well I for one have seen him actually track players and rescue us right to the edge of our own box.... his main problem is Southgates system...... we just don't move the ball quick enough round the pitch.... its got to be at a pace that works the opposition as Town do... . You get the benefits deeper in the game but also poor opposition can cope as well anyway and they are the ones we usually put 3 or 4 past.

Sorry, but whilst he did track back and get invovled where he was not needed on occasion, he showed no movement at all up front, and did not even break into the box when Saka was beating men out wide and looking for someone to cross to.

These things work both ways. Midfielders cant play the ball quickly when there is no movement ahead, because defenders step up and squeeze the space when there is no threat behind and noone pulling them around.

Your right he should be dropped but won't be,
In the end this will probably see us now out with a whimper he's so lethargic,
Yesterday first half at least two/three balls pulled back into the middle for him to run on to where the hell was he

This is a really odd take on arguably one of the best Centre backs to play the game for me. Top 10 all time for me.

He's a monster of a centre back. Not mobile and not good a passing. I genuinely don't know how you could come to that conclusion on VVD. He's rapid and a fantastic range of passing. He's got a wand of a boot and can ping a pass or smash one I'm from 30 yards. Brilliant in the air. He's a generational talent at CB. No real weaknesses.

Nailed it. He's not been the same player since his knee injury. Also, believing in his own hype has been counter productive. Dutch arrogance maybe. Sorry to delve into stereotypes.

P.S. Stereotypes exist for a reason.
