Beaten but leaves a legacy of never giving up on lost causes.
Hopefully our boys continue to do the same this coming season. The comeback wins are always special.

I don't get this BBC obsession with describing him as the greatest British athlete ever. Sure, he was the most successful male British tennis player but there are a lot of other sports where British players have succeeded far more than him.

Three Majors, two Olympic Golds, & a Davis Cup. That’s a very special career. We may never see another British player like it. He really toughened himself up from young frailties & set an amazing example to everyone. Had to compete against Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, all in their prime. Wonder what he’ll do next?

Agreed. He may scrape into the top 20 male tennis players in history. Lewis Hamilton on the other hand is in the top 5 F1 drivers in history. Murray got knighted years before Hamilton who only got his gong when it would have been impossible not to award him. I think why Lewis is disliked is that people expected him to be a crusader for black people when in reality he is another F1 playboy.

Tennis is surely more competitive than F1/other motor sports though? Murray had the bad luck to spend his entire career against the 3 best ever players and still came out with a few accolades. Pretty impressive in my book.

Considering the G forces, reaction times and physical abilities required to drive f1 cars, absolutely. The physical workouts required to maintain peak fitness through the season is incredible.
At 39 for lewis to continue to achieve what he is it's incredible.

a niche perspective

They do have to be incredibly fit and able to withstand extremely strong forces for 1-2 hours in fairness.

F1 is still very different beast to most sports and drivers success has a lot of input from team etc.

Murray is clearly one of our greatest athletes if not the greatest of all time. No issue with that. Great success and would have had 10+ slams in another era.

Fred Perry won eight of the things, albeit with long trousers and a bit of brylcreem.

I don’t get the obsession with him either. OTT as far as I’m concerned. Terrific player who made the most of his talent. 18th equal in the list of grand slam winners in the open era, so there have been plenty better. Plenty less difficult to watch with his face pulling and histrionics.

The everlasting ‘fair well Andy’ nonsense was irritating too. Not only did he deny another player the chance of competing at Wimbledon and the Olympics, his old bat of a mother also had the brass neck to have a pop at Raducanu for not playing with Sir Andy and putting her own chances at risk.

There is obviously a case too for Seb Coe or Nick Faldo but it is interesting to note that Murray was world No.1 (at a time of Nadal, Djokovic and Federer) for 44 weeks before injuries kicked in, so who knows how many more titles he might have one in a golden era for tennis.

This chart sums up his spectacular fall from No.1.

Name me 20 better tennis players than Murray? I'm not even particularly partial to Murray but you have to respect what he means to the sport. F1 is hardly even a sport is why with the most important element being the design team, and all the sycophantic drive to survive watchers is the most tiring.

Murray is only the 4th best tennis payer of his generation.
While comparing different eras in a single sport is hard, trying to compare sportsmen from different sports is near impossible e.g. golf, motor racing, etc. And individual sportsmen versus team competitors? How do you fit, say, Steve Redgrave or Daley Thompson into this list, but they're both worth a shout.

Pancho Gonzales, Lew Hoad, Rod Laver, Maureen Connolly, Louise Brough, B-J King, Yvonne Goolagong/Cawley, John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras, Ivan Lendl,
Bjorn Borg, Steffi Graf, Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, John Newcombe, Boris Becker, Ken Rosewall, Serena & Venus Williams.

BUT none of these were British.

Well, that's the thing. Most top tennis players are now grinders, as was Murray. But if a grinder meets a slightly better grinder, the latter will probably win 2/3 of their matches, as Djokjovic did versus Murray (career 25:11).

This is the crux. How do you compare across generations and across sports? There is a general increase in sports science and athleticism so modern athletes are generally more athletic. But then Murray's body and athleticism are partly what has held him back.

Were Daley Thompson, Ian Botham, James Anderson, Graeme Hick, Ryan Giggs, George Best, James Hunt, Mo Farah, Nick Faldo, and probably many more any less athletic than Andy Murray? I would argue all were far more successful.
