Timing of Chairman retiring 08:58 - Aug 7 with 2306 viewsvictorysquad

Just a thought that this has not been great timing in the middle of our busiest close season for years

If he was just slowing things down them fair enough, but MA has a lot on his plate right now

It was a very sudden and surprising announcement. I hope all is well with O'Leary and with how everything is going but it cannot be good for Ashton to be taking on the extra role.

Businesses rarely combine the role of Chief Exec and Chairman for good reasons. It is usually frowned upon.

Personally I hope we are able to appoint a new chairman in the medium term. As you say MA has a lot on his plate, and everyone benefits from some wise counsel from time-to-time.

Possibly this can come from the other board members/investors but a good chairman can really help the leadership team

It was noteworthy that when the KMac thing blew up at the start of the summer, Ed Schwarz flew in.
I am so sorry to lose the wisdom of MOL. He is absolutely impressive, quietly spoken yet authoritative - one of those rare types confident to voice his own doubts as part of his path to an inevitably good decision.

I think people are probably over-egging the work that a chairman would be doing in this structure - I don’t see how O’Leary was doing anything on a day to day basis (especially with regards to club matters). Ashton might have to chair more meetings (on a monthly/quarterly basis) and report to the ownership group in a slightly different manner around shareholding matters, but I don’t feel like he’s taken on anything major that will stop him doing his job.

He looked quite relaxed when I passed him yesterday on Playford Road, with his essex elbow out the window, in his suped up Q8 and aviators on.

He seems to be channelling his inner Tom Cruise.

It is the absence of someone impartial and with authority looking at things and going:

“I don’t think you are really happy with this list of applicants for the role of manager. Let’s not settle. What can we do to get the right man?”

“You look tired. You really need a holiday. We need you at your best”

“Those plans for this season look fine. But can we get another task looking in more detail about plans for 3 years time. Those haven’t been updated in a while now”

I did wonder if it was for health or personal reasons. If so, wish all the best to O'Leary and family. Maybe simply has other projects he wants to concentrate on, having seen this one safely on its way.

Tho I'm not sure there is a calm moment to step aside on the Gamechanger/McKenna rocket ride.

This. I did notice that he missed a fair few games last season too so no great surprise to me that's he moving on.

I think MOL was a sound board of reason more than anything, and a figure head.

But think transactionally it is far more Ashton and Luke Werhurn who are the active negotiators.

So don't think MOL has any impact to be honest.
