How do we think we’d be doing if we were still in the Champ with this squad? 19:00 - Oct 7 with 2118 viewsITFCMonk

Obviously it wouldn’t have happened and we probably wouldn’t have even spent 5-10% of what we have, but do we think we’d be sitting top of the Champ with these same players?

Very likely yes. We cherry-picked a fair bit of last season's best talent in the summer, to add to our already top-two squad.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

No. It currently looks like the town squad KM took on and will take time to become a team.

You think the town side that won promotions played games with ease. We didn't win every game but we almost played blind football most games. Players knew where others were running before they had even started to run.

It's a shame that promotion had to = ripping apart your team but we didn't have a choice. But right now, no this team wouldn't be near the top of the championship.

My concern is we picked up 98 points with a last seasons squad. That will take some replicating whoever we have if we end up back there!!

Absolutely ridiculous

A team sitting 17th in the premier league that has picked up points against Brighton and Villa would 100% be up at the top

96 points, but it was an exceptionally strong Championship with the squads Leicester, Southampton, and Leeds had. I don’t think it will take nearly as high points tally for autos this season.

Disagree. You are right that we have a collection of players rather than a team at the moment, but the standard of the divisions is miles apart. I’ve watched Championship football this season and it is slow, mistake strewn and the players look so small by comparison.

Sunderland Leeds was a top table clash. It wasn’t the best, topped off with a comedy equaliser. We’d have too much for most of these teams in my view.

Possibly your most ridiculous post. The standard in the championship this year is worse than last year . We would be easily top

We lost to Wimbledon. Drew to Southampton and haven't won a game of football yet whilst we gel this squad.

Silly me for saying we wouldn't automatically be top. So ridiculous. Tut tut.

The whole point of being a mercenary joining recently promoted teams is to put yourself in the shop window and jump ship asap. Usually the only escape is a loan as clubs have woken up to the risks associated with failures with an over-inflated opinion of themselves - unless they can bluff their way into the young and promising category.

Not Ipswich though - who were daft enough to sign three of them.

You very clearly said we wouldn't be near the top. Not that we wouldn't be top

Drawing away at Southampton is probably a strong sign that we would be near the top given where Southampton finished last season!

We would be top or very close to it. Our best players from last season are largely still here, as well as important subs (Tuanzebe, Woolf, Burgess, Davis, Morsy, Luongo, Burns, Chaplin, Hutch, Broadhead, Hirst, Taylor, Al-Hamadi, Clarke, Walton). GK and LW are the only two areas in which we couldn't have played our 96-point team from the start (due to Broadhead's injury), so we'd have to make do with Jack Clarke, the top rated winger over the past three Championship seasons by a distance, and Muric, who strolled to 101 points with Burnley (or Walton, who many feel should always be our no.1 and has been at the club forever).

In reality we wouldn't be starting with the old lineup, because they're training with the new arrivals every week and are evidently being outperformed; McKenna is evaluating players' talent and cohesion throughout, and he's selecting the best blend available to his mind each game. He would be a poor coach if he wasn't doing this.

We're seeing it now once again with Burnley and Sheff Utd of course, the same tried script. Both found severely lacking in the PL, the latter labelled a laughing stock, confidence shot, the former with a new manager, best players raided, many new players arrived, and there they predictably now sit on 19 and 18 points and 9 games. They shook off the psychological scars and lack of gelling time quite quickly once the opposition got much easier.

Our form last season immediately improved once Moore and Sarmiento were recruited and ready to play, which took a couple of weeks maybe. Same for Broadhead, Luongo, Clarke, and Hirst in winter 22/23, they flew out of the traps providing brilliant 'cohesion' and talent on the ball, not because they were born with telepathic abilities but because they were parachuted into a league standard that they were more than comfortable with. 'Time to gel' this season is synonymous with 'time to see if the players may collectively improve to top-flight standard', which is no easy task but they're giving it their best shot.

I'd expect a bit of a stuttered start as the group grew in to a team before going on to win the division comfortably.

I think your first 5 words covers it really, its abit too 'if my grandma had wheels' to answer properly. But if we had a premier league manager and squad in the championship, we'd smash it a la Burnley.

But, if we hadn't gone up, from last years setup McKenna would be gone, probably Leif too, no hutch, and no hladky still. I reckon we probably might have had a shot at a loan for delap, but may not have been a priority if staying in champ. Also maybe a loan for someone like rak-sakyi.

Suspect we wouldve still brought townsend in to replace davis, maybe used some of the davis money on a keeper, someone like Cooper from Plymouth? Potentially looked at raiding Peterborough for some of their bright defenders, though Edwards went to the prem so probably unlikely.
