Where are our goals going to come from? 07:08 - Oct 10 with 2833 viewsringwoodblue

Delap has had a fantastic start in the PL and looks more than capable of scoring 15+ goals this season if he stays fit but I’m concerned where our other goals are going to come from.

Last season we had goals from all over the pitch. Wes and Omari and obviously others who aren’t starting now. I was hoping Jack Clarke and Sammie Szmodics would’ve contributed more goals by now. We can’t just rely on Delap and the odd wonder strike from Morsy to keep us up.

7 Games into a season in a league that is infinitely tougher than the league we were in last season.
Still finding our way into how we can play our way in this league, new players still learning our style and 'how' we score goals.

I'm pretty sure that McKenna et al will be looking at what you've mentioned.

Sammie Szmodics If we play him in the number 10 role.

Clarke, Szmodics, Delap, Hutch all have proven goalscoring. Well come good but we’ve effectively rebuilt a whole first team and it’s going to take time to click (there have been signs of it in our home games).

We have one of (if not the best) coaches in the country, he worked magic with players who’d had mostly lower league careers - imagine what he can do with this lot!

Agreed that there is still some clicking/settling needed for our attacking midfielders which should lead to more goals.

Not sure how many we'd have expected Clarke and Szmodics to have scored at this point ...

It's a fair point overall though and one potential issue may be that we put in a string of really stirring home performances without being able to put teams away. We could do with someone – maybe the man himself – stepping up and being the kind of johnny-on-the-spot Chaplin has been so brilliantly in the past couple of years. Lots of time to go though, lots of gelling too, and I suspect if it's a major concern in January we will try to spend our way out of it.

I think people are forgetting how few games there are in a premier league season, by half time Vs Everton we'll have played a fifth of all our football already.

With Delap firing, one breakaway goal from Szmodics (which I think Ake could've cleared off the line if he'd sprinted) and a deflection from Morsy...I share OP's concerns.

Out of curiosity, how many goals did you expect us to have scored by now? I think 6 is reasonable. Newcastle have scored 8 and they're 7th, Forest have scored 7 and they're 10th and we have scored more than Man United. We've created chances but I do think we could be creating more - for example, at West Ham we had 2 chances of real note which isn't good enough.

My concern is more with the goals we have conceded so far. They've been fairly basic goals to concede overall.

😂😂😂 - I’m more concerned where all these additional fans have come from as there were definitely empty seats at Roots Hall.

Why would you be concerned about that?

I don't think we're that far off seeing the goals spread around a bit more - all of those other players you've mentioned have been in good positions and had decent opportunities to score across the matches so far (Szmodics especially, despite the growing claim that playing as a left 10 is hampering him), plus Greaves in particular has got his head on a few set piece deliveries. Just need to work on execution, timing etc. which will come by working on it.

We also can't be as gung ho as we were last season so we're not going to be in situations where we're almost taking turns to have a shot every couple of minutes.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Delap is a young phenomenal striker, and he's our current major source of goals. This fact in itself kind of masks the shortcoming of how he's being played by McKenna atm I feel.

He doesn't lead the line. The best player we have for that is Hirst, who is brilliant at holding the ball up and bringing other forwards into the play, and " occupying" two CB's, which is why I feel Hirst needs to be re- installed as the number 9.

Delap scored most of his goals for Hull playing wide right. I think a front line of Hirst , Clarke, Szmodics, Delap could be dynamic and bring a wider spread of threat. Burns atm doesn't (for me) offer much threat. Omari loses possession playing in the number 10 roll and I do wonder if Szmodics could offer more atm.

My post is in no way intended to demean any of our players. It's just my take on how things might benefit from being tweaked.

What do others feel about how we can become more of an attacking threat?

I think it's really telling how you've not mentioned ogbene.

Biggest waste of money for use this summer I feel. Seen nothing interesting from him at all.

Glad Hirst has finally been mentioned in this thread, so far been used late in the game but has not really been the expected threat against tiring defences (but then, do Premier League defences tire ?) Worth remembering that he is still coming back from injury, and getting to grips with a higher league as well.

Now that Delap is establishing himself as such a serious goal threat I think we can expect to see oppositions doubling up on him at times, which should give space to Hutchinson or Burns or Smzodics or whoever else we play upfront and their goals will come. It would be an interesting change of formation to see if McKenna starts with both Delap (for his speed and power) and Hirst (for the hold up and supply.)

You missed the point. It’s not growth in the truest sense. They’ve always been there just decided to be elsewhere…for a very long time.

Ogbene kinda feels like the Aluko signing. Not one who's gonna pull up trees but will do a Job.

I agree with arnie tho. I don't like the current forward set up it doesn't feel like it works.

As I said recently. Either it's just time and we will see it work over time. Or we get to a point where KM realises he's kinda balls it up slightly and we go again. We just don't know yet.

Personally. I just don't get the hutch 10 role. He wasn't good at it last season imo so isn't gonna shine at it in this league. The reason he ended up being a 1st team regular was he came in and did an amazing job on the right.

Delap on the right.. I'd be happy to see it. Perhaps that will be a plan when we've signed another striker.

Ogbene Burns. Both players who need to run into the ball. I do feel for Burns as twice he's had chances rexneltt but defenders have been quicker to get blocks in.. Is this a level where he's not as quick as he appeared. Ogbene.. not really sure how to describe him. Has pace but no real end product to speak of.

a niche perspective

Been thinking this myself and theres one player with the guile and craft to read between the lines and cause a stir and score goals whos missed the start of the season.

Nathan Broadhead please stand and deliver.

Others have mentioned the physicality of the PL, Broadhead is too easily out muscled and I fear will be found out in this league. Please prove me wrong Nathan!
